Hello everyone,

I’m considering approaching my wardrobe project a bit differently and thought about using the IKEA KALLAX shelving unit as a base. My idea is to use the KALLAX as a modular wardrobe, especially for smaller rooms or bedrooms where a traditional wardrobe might be too bulky.

The question I have is: Do you have practical tips or experiences on how to best use the KALLAX as a wardrobe? Specifically, I’m interested in how to integrate clothing rods most effectively, whether drawers or boxes are recommended, and how to keep the appearance neat and durable.

Maybe also suggestions for additional fixtures or modifications to improve stability? I would also appreciate advice on optimizing storage space and organization.

Thanks in advance!

Honestly, I think the idea of using a KALLAX as a wardrobe is somewhat overrated. Sure, it’s simple and inexpensive, but let’s be honest: how often does that whole setup really hold up in the long run?

That’s exactly the point—if you constantly have to worry about the shelf tipping over, it just doesn’t feel secure.

And then: fabric boxes for underwear? Fine, but the construction isn’t designed for heavy winter coats or suits. People act like it’s all easy, but this is really just a temporary workaround.

I would rather recommend a proper wardrobe that’s built to handle such loads.

Well, I would disagree! Precisely because the KALLAX is so flexible, it can be easily customized. You just shouldn’t expect it to replace a solid wood wardrobe! 🙂

Fabric boxes from IKEA are easily accessible and help keep things organized

Additionally, fabric boxes are a great feature, allowing you to personalize the shelving unit in many ways. Wishing you continued success!

For clothes rails: Simply tension telescopic rods between two shelves.

Fabric boxes are great for small items.

Secure the shelf to the wall, otherwise it may tip over when heavily loaded.

In addition to clothing rods, hooks on the side panels are useful for belts and bags.

Be careful with heavy loads, as KALLAX is not designed for very heavy clothing.

Always secure the shelf to the wall!
