I’m about to buy a KALLAX shelf from IKEA, but I have concerns about my hardwood floor. My floor is oiled and quite sensitive, so I’m wondering if the fully loaded KALLAX could leave marks or unpleasant pressure dents.
Has anyone had experience with KALLAX shelves on hardwood floors? I’m especially interested in deeper impressions or permanent marks caused by the weight of the shelf if no special protective measures are taken.
For context: The KALLAX will be fully loaded with books and other heavy items. That’s why I’m curious if IKEA’s floor protection (e.g., felt pads) is sufficient or if it’s better to use thicker protective boards or even consider a different setup.
Thanks for your advice!

I didn’t have any marks, but I always used felt pads under the feet. That is correct. Felt pads distribute the weight and prevent localized pressure marks. Additionally, the flooring should be in good condition and either oiled or sealed to better absorb the load.
If the shelf is going to be heavily loaded, I recommend protecting the floor area underneath the shelf, for example with a thin hardboard panel. This prevents permanent marks and reduces stress on the floor.
Oh, I’m very familiar with this topic! I have my KALLAX fully loaded with heavy books and was initially worried about dents or marks! But with the right felt pads and a rug under the shelf, everything worked perfectly!
The pads work great :-) and the rug provides extra protection. This way, your hardwood floor stays in excellent condition and the KALLAX stands very securely. I would definitely recommend at least using felt pads, even better combined with a small rug underneath! Good luck!

For those who want to be absolutely sure, you can also try using rubber or silicone furniture pads under the KALLAX unit; these further reduce pressure and the risk of marks.
It is also important not to slide the shelf directly on the hardwood floor, as abrasion can quickly cause small scratches and dents.

whether indentations or unsightly pressure marks can occur due to the weight of a fully loaded KALLAXIf the floor is already heavily worn, this can of course happen. Shelving units like the KALLAX have relatively narrow legs, which creates point loads.
Therefore, definitely use gliders or protective pads to avoid indentations.
