Hello everyone,

I recently bought a KALLAX shelf unit from Ikea, which I use as a module in my living room. Unfortunately, I have the problem that when I move it across my hardwood floor, small dents and pressure marks keep appearing. They are not huge, but definitely noticeable and annoying. I suspect that the KALLAX modules, due to their weight and plastic feet, damage the floor finish, especially with frequent moving or cleaning.

Has anyone had experience with how to effectively prevent this? Are there padding options, felt pads, or other tricks that really help to avoid dents? I’m looking for practical and feasible solutions, not expensive modifications. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

It is best to stick felt pads made of thick material under the feet. This way, the weight is distributed more evenly, and dents should be avoided.

Felt gliders are good, but be sure to pay attention to the thickness. Thin gliders hardly help; use ones with at least 5 mm (0.2 inches) thickness.

Hello mustafaman,

I’m familiar with this issue. Many people underestimate how sensitive parquet flooring can be to pressure—especially from furniture with small contact areas. I recommend not just using simple felt pads, but combining them with rubber or plastic bases. This increases the contact area and distributes the weight more effectively.

It’s also important to replace the pads regularly because once they’re worn down, they hardly protect the floor anymore. Alternatively, you can buy special furniture pads designed specifically for delicate floors. These may be slightly more expensive, but the quality is worth it.

If you move your furniture around often, avoid casters with wheels. They often leave permanent marks. Soft sliders with a large contact area are a better choice. Hope this helps! 🙂

Specifically for your KALLAX unit: The shelf has relatively small plastic feet, which create high surface pressure. To prevent dents on parquet flooring, the contact area should be increased.

Recommendation:
1. Use felt pads with a minimum thickness of 6 mm (0.24 inches).
2. Optionally, attach a hard plastic plate (e.g., acrylic or polycarbonate) underneath the pads to further distribute the load.
3. Make sure the parquet surface is clean and dry to prevent the padding from slipping.

This combination can significantly reduce unevenness and pressure marks. It is a proven practical solution for furniture with small footprint areas.

Hey mustafaman, that sounds really frustrating with the dents! 🙂 I have my KALLAX on extra-thick felt pads, which I always stick on myself. They do make moving it a bit harder, but they keep the floor intact. Sometimes a simple felt mat under the furniture is enough, but that can get tricky when cleaning.

Oh, and flexible rubber pads have also worked well for me; they go under the felt and provide extra protection to the parquet flooring against impacts. Maybe give that a try! 😉
