Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into how the KALLAX magnetic latch performs in everyday use. My question is: Is the KALLAX magnetic latch really sufficient in practice to keep doors securely closed at all times and prevent accidental opening? I have heard many positive things so far, but what matters most to me is how durable this latch is with frequent use, whether it holds well on somewhat heavier or fully loaded doors, and if it remains reliable over the long term.

I am particularly interested in real-world experiences involving challenging situations, such as households with children or frequent opening and closing when putting items in and out. If anyone has detailed long-term experience with this magnetic latch, I would appreciate a thorough assessment. Thanks in advance!

I’m quite familiar with this issue – especially with children at home, you often see how quickly doors can open. The KALLAX magnetic catch is generally reliable in everyday use, but of course there are situations where it reaches its limits. With heavier doors, for example, it sometimes doesn’t hold perfectly.

In our case, the magnet often couldn’t withstand the kids’ rough play. However, under normal use without excessive force, it does its job. If you like, I can explain in more detail how we solved this.

The magnetic lock is sufficient if you do not expect heavy use. For heavy doors or frequent use, it’s better to install additional mechanisms.

Thanks for the feedback. Could you please explain exactly what happens? Does the door open completely, or does it just fail to close properly? And have you found an alternative that is a bit more durable?

What kind of additional mechanisms would you specifically recommend? So far, I have only considered the KALLAX fasteners and would appreciate suggestions.

I’m joining the discussion because I have also used the KALLAX magnetic lock in the past.

1. Functionality: The magnet keeps the door closed through repulsion or attraction (depending on the model). It works well under normal use.

2. Load: For heavily loaded doors, for example, filled with books or heavy items, the magnetic force is often not strong enough to prevent unwanted openings.

3. Tips:
- Reinforce the lock → for example, with stronger magnets (if compatible)
- Add magnetic or mechanical latches, such as small hinge locks or turn latches
- Avoid uneven loading on the doors whenever possible

4. Misuse: With children or pets, the magnet can often be easily overcome unintentionally. An additional lock is usually recommended, especially if dangerous items are stored inside the cabinet.

In summary: The KALLAX magnetic lock is sufficient for normal applications, but for increased use or safety requirements, additional security measures are advisable.

This is exactly my main concern. I am especially focused on protecting small children, who can sometimes be a bit too rough. Do you have any recommendations on how to reinforce the magnetic lock without making it too complicated or visually disruptive? I don’t want to significantly change the open look of the KALLAX.

Also, how long do such retrofits typically last in everyday use? Are there quality differences among the accessory parts?
