Hello everyone,
I would like to start a discussion on the topic: "Kallax in constant outdoor rain – how long does it really last?"
I am considering using an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit on my terrace for storage, but the roof covering is not complete, so the shelf is often exposed to rain, especially during prolonged heavy rainfall.
My specific questions are: How resistant is the KALLAX shelf unit to continuous rain or moisture? Are there any experiences regarding how long it holds up before visible damage appears, such as swelling, discoloration, or even structural issues?
I understand that the material is particleboard with a foil coating, but I suspect that constant moisture could cause problems fairly quickly.
If anyone has used the KALLAX outdoors for an extended period under similar conditions or has tested it, I would appreciate feedback on how the shelf has performed in real-life situations.
Thank you in advance!

Particle boards exposed to constant moisture usually start to deteriorate after just a few weeks, up to a maximum of 2-3 months.Thank you, that is a very helpful and well-founded assessment.
So, I understand that with continuous rain and humidity, a realistic durability is about one to three months—if the shelf is standing freely and unprotected.
What is also important to me now is whether anyone has experience with treating the KALLAX, for example sealing, painting, or other methods to extend its outdoor lifespan?
Is this technically and economically worthwhile, or is it better to simply get a weather-resistant piece of furniture?

Any experiences with treating KALLAX, e.g. sealing, painting, or other methods?Impregnation or painting can provide temporary surface protection but usually does not penetrate deeply enough into the particleboard. There is still a risk that moisture can seep through edges and joints, damaging the boards.
Professionally, plywood, hardwood, or specialized exterior-grade wood products are used outdoors because they are inherently moisture-resistant.
If you really want to use KALLAX outside, then:
- Carefully seal all edges and joints with silicone or waterproof sealant
- Apply a coating with exterior-grade polyurethane varnish
- Prefer use in covered areas
However, investing in proper outdoor furniture is generally more durable and more sensible in the long term.
