Hello everyone,

I am considering upgrading my IKEA KALLAX shelves with glass doors. More specifically, I am thinking about the best way to install glass doors on the KALLAX units, which types of glass are suitable, and what to watch out for during installation.

Has anyone here ever built or fitted glass doors for KALLAX? What are your experiences regarding stability, visual effect, and usability? I am especially interested in whether it’s feasible to make the doors yourself or if it’s better to use prefabricated accordion or pivot doors.

I look forward to all your feedback and helpful tips!

I built KALLAX doors using Plexiglas sheets. I simply attached aluminum profiles all around and used hinges. Plexiglas is sturdy and safer than regular glass.

Hello @GAUTAN, your idea is interesting. If you want to use real glass, make sure to choose safety glass (tempered glass or laminated glass) because regular glass is too fragile and poses a higher risk of injury. Additionally, I recommend measuring carefully before installation and selecting hinges with soft-close mechanisms to prevent damage to the shelf.

If you have good DIY skills, you can also build the doors yourself, but you will need specialized tools and experience with glass cutting and frame assembly. Alternatively, there are suppliers who offer custom-fit glass frames for KALLAX.

I installed glass doors on my KALLAX unit, but I used plexiglass. I wouldn’t recommend regular glass, as it’s too risky. Definitely use hinges that allow precise adjustment.

For KALLAX glass doors, simply insert glass panels into the corresponding aluminum frames and attach them using hinges. When using real glass, only safety glass should be used. Alternatively, glass doors that fit the KALLAX can also be purchased.

I find the topic of KALLAX glass doors really fascinating! I tried it myself once but struggled with precisely adjusting the frames.

Especially the mounting inside the shelf is tricky since KALLAX isn’t designed specifically as a door frame. I really wanted the look of glass because of its lightness, but it was quite a challenge. If you manage to do it, I would be very interested in hearing the details!
