Hello everyone,
I am considering upgrading my IKEA KALLAX shelves with glass doors. More specifically, I am thinking about the best way to install glass doors on the KALLAX units, which types of glass are suitable, and what to watch out for during installation.
Has anyone here ever built or fitted glass doors for KALLAX? What are your experiences regarding stability, visual effect, and usability? I am especially interested in whether it’s feasible to make the doors yourself or if it’s better to use prefabricated accordion or pivot doors.
I look forward to all your feedback and helpful tips!

The fastening inside the shelf is trickyThat's correct. I used special brackets that can be screwed inside the KALLAX frame. They hold well and don't cause any damage to the outside.
A safety note regarding glass: If you plan to install glass doors and are not using acrylic glass (Plexiglas), I strongly recommend using tempered safety glass (ESG). This type of glass breaks into small, harmless pieces, significantly reducing the risk of injury.
Laminated safety glass (VSG) is another option, consisting of two glass panes with a plastic interlayer – very durable but also more expensive and heavier.
If you have any questions about where to source the glass or how to install it, I’m happy to help.

I would also recommend using acrylic glass if you want to do it yourself. It’s easier to cut, lighter, and much safer.
If you prefer a more elegant option, you can of course combine glass with aluminum frames – very stylish, especially with slim profiles.
Go for it, it will look fantastic!

A note on installation: The original KALLAX openings are not perfectly square and precise, which makes fitting prefabricated glass doors somewhat challenging. Therefore, I recommend measuring multiple times in advance and ideally having custom frames made.
The choice of hinges is also crucial – small cup hinges with adjustment options make alignment much easier.

original KALLAX openings are not precisely square This is an interesting point that I actually hadn’t considered yet. Thanks for pointing it out!I’m curious how you have handled the adjustment of the doors. Are there any tips on how to achieve a neat fit despite slight inaccuracies?
Also, I would like to know if anyone has specific recommendations regarding hinge types, especially which models work best for glass doors on the KALLAX.
