ᐅ KALLAX doors splintering the first time they are opened – have you filed a complaint?

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a KALLAX shelf unit from Ikea with the matching doors, and to my surprise, when I opened the new doors for the very first time, I noticed that the edges were actually chipping – the surface is peeling off, and it looks very untidy. I’m curious if anyone else has had similar experiences? How did you deal with this issue? Did you file a claim for the doors, and if so, how well or poorly was the process handled?

I’m asking specifically because I expected better quality and am generally interested in how Ikea handles claims in cases of such material defects.

Thanks in advance for your opinions and advice!

There are some reports regarding chipping KALLAX doors, which suggest limited durability of the melamine coating and edge finishing. This issue can especially occur during the first use of the doors if the edge protection layers were not applied properly.

Statistically, the defect rate for this product is below 1%. In Germany, a 2-year statutory warranty applies in cases of material defects, which Ikea covers. For a claim, it is essential to have the purchase receipt, photos taken before installation, and to report the issue as soon as possible.

My advice: Contact Ikea customer service directly, preferably through the official hotline, and have all relevant documents ready. Alternatively, you can also submit a claim via the online form.

Did you check the doors for visible damage before installation or shipment?

Thank you for the detailed response. Yes, I inspected the doors unpacked—no visible damage before installation, which is why this situation is so confusing to me.

You are not alone with this kind of experience

Good to know I’m not completely alone. I only recently installed and opened the doors. This morning, when opening for the first time, a corner suddenly chipped off.

Receipt, photos before installation, and prompt reporting are crucial

I took photos before installation, and the receipt is also available. I will contact customer service later and report how it goes.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Great, those are the best conditions for a clear claim! 😎

Ikea usually requires you to return the damaged parts – but if you want to avoid endless discussions, a direct conversation at the store can sometimes be more effective than emails. 🙂

Hello everyone,

a quick update on my issue: I spoke with customer service this morning and explained the problem with the splintering doors. When I asked if a complaint was possible, the representative said that if a material defect can be proven and the receipt is provided, exchanging or replacing the doors is straightforward.

They asked me to send a brief email with photos of the damaged areas and a copy of the receipt.

I will send the email today and will get back to you once I hear back. Thanks again for your support!

Sounds good. Make sure not to cause any further damage to the damaged door and document everything clearly.

It is also important that the doors have not already been independently repaired. Damage to the material may cause Ikea to refuse the replacement.

If you receive a replacement, check it carefully on site or upon delivery so that you can report any defects as early as possible.
