Hello everyone,

I recently bought a KALLAX shelf unit from Ikea with the matching doors, and to my surprise, when I opened the new doors for the very first time, I noticed that the edges were actually chipping – the surface is peeling off, and it looks very untidy. I’m curious if anyone else has had similar experiences? How did you deal with this issue? Did you file a claim for the doors, and if so, how well or poorly was the process handled?

I’m asking specifically because I expected better quality and am generally interested in how Ikea handles claims in cases of such material defects.

Thanks in advance for your opinions and advice!

Oh no, that sounds really frustrating! 😕 I once had minor chipping on another piece of furniture, which I reported immediately – the store was quite accommodating and quickly offered a replacement. It might help to visit the nearest furniture store in person or contact their customer service. Good luck! 🙂

In case of material defects, making a claim is always the right approach.
Important: Keep the purchase receipt and take as many photos as possible before installation.

Hello Ontunau,

In my opinion, the issue you’re experiencing with the splintering KALLAX doors is not typical for this product’s usual quality. The doors are made from a core of pressed fiberboard (MDF) with a melamine coating. The edges, in particular, are vulnerable if mishandled or damaged during transport.

Did you inspect the doors for visible damage before installation or shipping? Small nicks can sometimes be difficult to notice. Another aspect to consider is whether the doors were installed correctly—over-tightened hinges or improper opening angles can create stress that causes the edges to break.

Please also check if the parts are original. In some cases, counterfeit or clearance items of lower quality may be sold.

If all of these possibilities are ruled out, I can only recommend filing a complaint.

Have you already requested a replacement from customer service?

That’s really unfortunate that the doors are causing problems so early! 😮

I think if you notice a defect right from the first use, it’s important to report it immediately. Ikea often repairs or replaces items quickly – don’t give up if they don’t help right away. You’re not alone with this experience; I’ve had issues with doors too, and in the end, I got a replacement!

Keep your spirits up, you’ll definitely manage this! 🙂

Submit a complaint and wait for a replacement. This is what you should do. Ikea is usually accommodating if you have the receipt.
