Hello everyone, I recently installed the doors on my Kallax shelving unit, but unfortunately they are not perfectly aligned – some of them are slightly crooked and not completely flush with the cabinet frame. I attached the hinges according to the instructions, but the door still doesn’t sit properly and looks a bit warped.

My question is: What options are there to adjust the doors on a Kallax unit afterward so that they close straight and flush? Are there any recommended procedures or specific hinge adjustments I should consider? I’m also interested to know if there are any helpful installation tips for making adjustments when the shelving unit is already assembled and I don’t want to take everything apart again.

Thanks in advance for your advice and experiences!

Hello galiam,

Regarding your issue with the slanting Kallax doors: the hinges on the Kallax units allow limited adjustment in three dimensions—usually by means of three screws. This lets you adjust the door horizontally, vertically, and in depth.

First, you should check whether the hinges are properly and fully screwed in. Often, one screw is not tightened all the way or is slightly misaligned, which can already affect the door’s alignment.

For the adjustment, I recommend the following sequence:

1. Loosen the screws slightly so the hinge can move.
2. Adjust the screw for horizontal alignment so the door sits flush against the cabinet side.
3. Then set the vertical position with the corresponding screw, so the door does not tilt up or down.
4. Finally, adjust the depth so that the door is flush with the cabinet surface.

Sometimes it helps to temporarily remove the door and check all the hinge screws before remounting and adjusting.

If your shelving unit is already assembled and you don’t want to take it apart, you can work with a mirror or spirit level from below and the side to better see where exactly the misalignment occurs.

I hope this helps you.

Hello galiam,

to align the doors of your Kallax shelf with millimeter precision, it is worth proceeding very carefully and systematically. I recommend the following steps, which I have often applied in practice with furniture featuring adjustable hinges:

First, it is important to know the exact dimensions of the opening in the shelf, including width and height, as well as the position of the hinge plates. Kallax hinges typically have three adjustment screws: left-right, up-down, and forward-backward (depth).

The order for adjusting should be:

1. Check the exact position of the hinges – loosen the screws and initially place the hinge in the ideal basic position close to the intended mounting points.

2. Align horizontally using the left screw. When doors look crooked, a minimal horizontal offset is often the cause.

3. Next, adjust the vertical position. This is usually done via one of the concealed adjustment screws, which you can easily reach when the door is open.

4. And very important: don’t forget the depth adjustment! This ensures that the doors sit flush against the frame and do not protrude too far out or tilt inward.

A helpful tip: if you can remove the door (usually by lifting it upwards at the attachment), you can adjust the hinge separately from the shelf more precisely. Then place the door back and check the result.

Besides mechanical adjustment, the doors may also be slightly warped – which can happen, especially with older or moisture-sensitive wood surfaces. In that case, only replacement or careful reworking of the door helps.

Finally, I recommend checking each adjustment after a few screw turns with a spirit level. Small corrections add up quickly.

Could you also say whether the doors are hinged on the left or right side? And if the hinges are original from Ikea? That would make it easier to provide more precise guidance.

Best regards!

That’s true – I did the same and it worked wonders for me!

Just to add my special trick: If the doors on Kallax sometimes don’t close perfectly even after adjustment, I place very thin foam rubber strips under the hinge screws to compensate for small gaps.

It’s not absolutely necessary, but it often works wonders when a door, for example, is slightly skewed or minimally warped.

And don’t worry, this doesn’t impair the function; it actually makes closing smoother and helps stabilize the alignment.

So for you, this might be the final fine-tuning 😉

Otherwise, just make sure to follow the correct order of tightening the screws for adjustment, and it should fit perfectly. Good luck!
