ᐅ KALLAX doors keep swinging open when the windows are open – what can be done?

suuskenGood morning everyone,
I have a problem with my KALLAX shelves from IKEA. The doors often open by themselves when I have windows open in the room, especially when drafts cause changes in temperature and humidity. The shelf is freestanding, and the doors usually close without magnets or anything similar, but they are adjusted so that they should close properly.
My question: What mechanical or building physics reasons could cause the KALLAX doors to open repeatedly as soon as a window is open? And what can I do about it without resorting to expensive solutions or modifications? Are there any simple tricks or small aids that might fix the problem?
Looking forward to your experiences and advice!

For clarification: When windows are open, air currents can create either negative or positive pressure inside the room, depending on the position and air pressure difference. KALLAX doors are lightweight and do not have a self-adhesive sealing mechanism. This means the doors can be pushed open by the airflow.
As a practical solution, magnetic catches are recommended, which can be easily installed on the doors and the frame. This cost-effective measure significantly increases the holding force.
Alternatively, using spring clips or a minimal angled stop can help mechanically secure the door without noticeably affecting the appearance.

Hello suusken,
I have a similar issue with my KALLAX shelf unit. The problem actually arises from changes in air pressure within the room, as Joshbe described. An open window often creates a negative pressure that pulls the doors open.
Another option is to adjust the doors slightly, if possible, so they close more securely. On my shelf, I attached small felt pads to the edges, which not only help seal the doors a bit but also hold them better when closing.
If you’re somewhat handy, additional magnetic catches are the best solution. They are inexpensive, discreet, and easy to install.
Hope this helps you!

I also had to secure my KALLAX doors because with an open window they would sometimes suddenly swing open without warning 😉
I got self-adhesive magnetic catches that hold perfectly without drilling and are almost invisible.
Alternatively, you can try pressing the doors slightly past the latch point by a millimeter or so, so they’re less likely to be opened by drafts.
It sounds simple, but it’s often more effective than constantly fiddling with a small tool.
Good luck!
