Hello everyone,

I recently bought an IKEA KALLAX shelving unit, which I had already assembled. Since I moved, I carefully disassembled and packed the unit, but now, after unpacking it again, reassembling it doesn’t work as smoothly as before.

The individual parts seem undamaged, but some of the side panels or connectors no longer fit together as precisely as during the first assembly. It feels like the drill holes or guide grooves are slightly warped, which makes assembly significantly more difficult.

Has anyone had similar experiences where a KALLAX shelving unit couldn’t be reassembled neatly after transport? Or any tips on how to properly put it back together despite these issues? Maybe someone is familiar with typical weak points or the material tolerances?

I look forward to your experiences and advice.

Have you already checked if all parts stayed straight? Often, slight adjustments using a rubber or wooden mallet can help realign the holes correctly.

If necessary, you can also loosen the screws and carefully realign again.

That sounds really frustrating; I understand how annoying it is when you just want to reassemble a piece of furniture and then run into such problems.

I once had a similar issue with a shelf I was transporting – it might be due to the particleboard warping slightly or the connectors giving way. If possible, leave the shelf unpacked for a while; sometimes the materials settle back into shape.

How was the shelf stored during transport? Was it disassembled or fully assembled? That can make a difference.

Maybe it’s because the laminated wood warps slightly or the connectors loosen.

That could very well be the case, thanks for the tip.

The shelf came completely disassembled and flat-packed. I thought that would actually be the safest option. However, all the parts were stored for quite some time somewhat tightly packed in the box.

I will try that, although I’m worried I might damage the plastic anchors. Has anyone had experience with this?

Otherwise: Should I treat the holes with some moisture so that the material might expand a bit or not?

The KALLAX shelving unit is made of particleboard with a melamine coating, which can be damaged by exposure to moisture. In general, it is advisable to avoid contact with water or dampness, as the material may swell and suffer permanent damage.

During assembly after transport, it is important to ensure that all drill holes and connecting parts are not deformed.

My advice: carefully check all connection points for any structural changes. Minor distortions can be corrected with gentle taps using a rubber mallet (avoid metal hammers). Carefully redrilling or using suitable replacement dowels may also help, but these steps are better undertaken only if you have some experience with furniture assembly.

Regarding the screw loosening tool: the original IKEA screws and dowels are delicate, so handle them carefully to avoid breakage.

Hey, I once had the fun experience of trying to reassemble a KALLAX after transport – and yes, it can be a bit nerve-wracking 😉

Here are a few tips that might help you:
1. Assemble the parts first without screws to check if everything aligns properly.
2. If the holes don’t quite match anymore, try inserting the dowels loosely first and then bringing the parts together – sometimes a small misalignment causes issues.
3. To avoid losing screws, I recommend assembling the shelf on a flat and stable surface.

Yep, I’ve had that experience too. I wouldn’t use too much force. Good luck! 🙂
