Hello everyone,

I have a burn mark on my IKEA KALLAX shelf caused by dripping candle wax. The wax cooled and settled on the surface, leaving a discolored spot that looks quite unpleasant. I would prefer not to sand down the entire shelf since it is coated, and I’m not sure if I can restore the surface to its original finish afterward.

Does anyone have experience or tips on how to remove a burn mark caused by candle wax on KALLAX furniture? Are there any home remedies or special cleaning methods that work without damaging the surface?

I would really appreciate any helpful suggestions!

First, try carefully lifting the cooled wax off with a plastic card or spatula. Then, you can place an iron on a low setting with blotting paper or a thin cloth in between and gently warm the wax so it is absorbed. After that, treat the area with furniture polish.

This is generally the correct approach. It is important to avoid scratching the surface of the KALLAX, as the MDF material and melamine coating are delicate.

After lifting off the wax, you can use a warm iron and absorbent paper (paper towel or blotting paper) to remove any residue. Alternatively, a hairdryer can be used to soften the wax, which can then be wiped away with a cloth.

Important: Do not use sharp or abrasive cleaners, as these can dull or damage the surface. For the final cleaning, a slightly damp cloth with a little mild dish soap works well, followed by thoroughly drying the area.

If the stain is deeply set, unfortunately it can only be minimally improved, since the melamine surface cannot be sanded or refinished like wood.

That sounds really frustrating with the burn mark. I had a similar problem once with my IKEA shelf, but luckily it was just wax, which could be scraped off easily after it cooled down.

I can only confirm that – I accidentally worked too hard with a sharp-edged knife back then, and the spot became even more noticeable afterward. 🙁

My advice to you: be patient and careful, maybe test on an inconspicuous area first to see how the wax reacts before working directly on the mark. Fingers crossed that the shelf looks perfect again soon!

Hello janta,

to address the issue more precisely from a technical perspective: KALLAX shelves are made of MDF with a melamine resin coating. This surface is quite durable but not resistant to heat or physical deposits.

First, I would recommend considering the melting point of candle wax (~50-60°C (122-140°F)). By gently warming the wax (using a hairdryer on medium heat, not too hot), it becomes pliable and easier to wipe off. Using an iron with a cloth in between is a common method, but it always carries the risk of deforming the MDF if the heat is too intense.

After removing the wax residue, discoloration may remain. Since the melamine surface cannot be sanded down, you can only try using special furniture repair markers that match the color.

An alternative is a professional plastic or melamine cleaner (for example, containing isopropanol or mild solvents), but please test this on an inconspicuous corner first to avoid making the surface dull or stained.

It would also be important to know whether the burn mark is ‘only’ superficial, caused by wax, or if the material has actually been burned or damaged by the heat.

Could you perhaps evaluate this?
