Hello everyone,

I repurposed the Kallax shelf unit from Ikea as a bench, which actually works well in terms of size and stability. However, I have the problem that the cushion I placed on top keeps slipping whenever someone sits down or stands up. It’s quite annoying because it has to be repositioned constantly.

I have already tried securing the cushion with Velcro tape, but it doesn’t hold very long or is difficult to remove again. I also tried using rubber mats underneath; this reduces slipping but still isn’t sufficient.

How do you secure cushions on the Kallax when using it as a bench? What solutions have proven to be durable and practical without needing constant adjustment? I appreciate any specific ideas or experiences you have gained so far.

Mounting solution that offers a good balance between stability and flexibility

A good combination of hook-and-loop tape and an anti-slip mat works really well for me. I stick the hook-and-loop tape to the Kallax surface, with a thin anti-slip mat underneath. This way, the cushion doesn’t move even when you stand up, but you can still easily remove it.

Adding small rubber feet to the bottom of the cushion for extra grip completes the setup. Give it a try; it really adds a lot of comfort. 🙂

Good results can also be achieved with self-adhesive rubber pads on the corners of the upholstery. They reliably prevent slipping and are easy to remove.

Why not just cut the cushion to size and sew a tight cover with an elastic band around it?

I have to disagree – what’s the point of a tight elastic band if the Kallax itself doesn’t have a solid edge all around? My cushion extends well beyond the seat surface, so it still slips on the sides.

That’s why many consider a combination of foam rubber/anti-slip mat with Velcro the best compromise. And hey, if something’s wobbly or doesn’t fit, it’s easy to adjust – flexibility is key 🙂

Small Velcro dots along the bottom edge of the cushion, which fit precisely against the sides of the Kallax, already prevent most of the slipping. A thin, non-slip mat underneath is also advisable; combined, this provides a relatively simple, stable solution.
