Hello everyone,
I am planning to move my Kallax shelf unit during the winter and have a specific question that I haven’t been able to find a clear answer to anywhere: Does the Kallax coating freeze at very low temperatures during transport or when exposed briefly to the cold?
Specifically, I am interested in whether frost damage or extreme cold can cause small cracks in the coating or even permanent surface damage, for example, if the shelf is moved through an unheated stairwell or car. The Kallax coating is a type of laminate or paint, and I’m unsure how sensitive it is to such conditions.
Perhaps you have experience with this or can provide some technical insight? Thanks for any advice!

You can see it on the edges; they become brittle faster. This is an important point. Edges are the weak spots in Kallax units and can be more sensitive to large temperature fluctuations. If possible, protect the furniture pieces in the moving van with sufficient padding to reduce mechanical stress.
Additionally, prolonged storage in an unheated room can cause tensions in the laminated coating, although this normally does not lead to significant damage.
I moved my Kallax sometime in mid-January during frost – with the right preparations, it’s no big deal 🙂 A tip from me: when moving in winter, take it easy, don’t leave the parts in freezing areas, but get them inside and unpacked quickly.
I can confirm that. And if you transport the shelf outside, maybe replace the casters with sturdy protectors or wrap it well so the edges don’t get damaged. That way, everything stays perfect! 😉

Short-term exposure to freezing temperatures does not cause cracks or peeling of the laminate.
