Hello everyone, I have an Ikea Brimnes wardrobe and would like to know if there is a clear and comprehensive guide for retrofitting a soft-close function on the wardrobe doors.

The wardrobe originally does not come with soft-close, and I want to add the damping mechanism as neatly and safely as possible without damaging the doors or the furniture. Does anyone have reliable tips, illustrated step-by-step instructions, or even suitable retrofit kits that are compatible?

Details about installation, recommended tools, and possible difficulties would be helpful, as I’m not sure if the new system can be easily adapted to the existing hinges or if additional drilling or screw changes are necessary.

Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!

I upgraded my Brimnes with Blum soft-close hinges. They came with instructions and fit perfectly without any drilling. Just removed the old ones, installed the new ones, and that was it.

Retrofitting was something that concerned me for a long time. It is normal to feel uncertain during such tasks, especially when there is no official guide available.

At first, I was afraid of causing damage, but with careful planning and some patience, it worked out great. The key is to use the right tools and carefully check each step.

If you like, I can share some tips on how to securely hold the door when adjusting the hinges and how to avoid mistakes before installation.

Hi everyone, I really like how detailed you are discussing this topic here!

Just a little fun fact: I once tried installing soft-close mechanisms on my Brimnes, and it was truly a game-changer. You no longer hear the door closing, which greatly protects the cabinet.

A small tip from me: when buying soft-close dampers, look for models that allow fine adjustment – that way the closing action fits perfectly.

Good luck, and feel free to share how it goes for you!

Manufacturers like Blum or Hettich usually work without issues, as long as the hinge cup holes are 35 mm (1.38 inches). Just make sure to choose the types suitable for overlay doors.

Great, thanks for your feedback. That sounds like I don’t need to worry too much about making adjustments.

That really reassures me, because sometimes I tend to rush into these things. I will proceed carefully. Thanks for offering tips—I’ll gladly reach out if I get stuck during installation.

One more question for everyone: Does anyone know if there’s a noticeable difference in durability or quality between different soft-close hinges? Or are they all similar standard products?
