Hello everyone,

I have a question that has probably been discussed before, but I would like to ask it in detail to get targeted answers: Is there a simple way to repaint Ikea Besta doors afterward without fully sanding them down or completely repainting?

I’m especially interested in the best approach if the doors are already installed and I want to avoid extensive disassembly and intensive sanding.

Which materials (paint, primer) are suitable to ensure the paint adheres permanently to the surfaces of the Besta doors? What surface preparation is needed if the doors, for example, already have a foil or a painted finish?

I look forward to your experiences and tips on how to achieve this as easily as possible while ensuring durability and a good appearance.

For those interested in a more professional approach, here is my summary:

- Surface: Melamine laminates are challenging to coat because they are very smooth and chemically resistant.
- Preparation: Clean with isopropanol or a specialized degreaser, then avoid coarse sanding; instead, use a fine abrasive pad.
- Primer: Use an adhesion primer specifically designed for plastics, for example, polyurethane- or epoxy-based.
- Paint: Two-component acrylic or polyurethane paint offers the best results for interior furniture due to its durability.
- Application: It is best to remove doors before painting; apply paint using a spray gun or a fine roller.

When fully refinishing laminated doors, removing the laminate before starting often makes sense but is time-consuming. For smaller areas, you can try the method described above.

Otherwise, laminate or paint products available at hardware stores are often not suitable for long-term use on these surfaces.

I would like to add that it is very important for DIY enthusiasts to really take their time with surface preparation.

In my experience, a good result depends on the following points:
- Patience when sanding, do not rush
- A clean and dust-free work environment
- Sufficient drying times after primer and topcoat

It is also important not to apply the paint too thickly to avoid dripping or unsightly unevenness. If unsure, it is better to apply multiple thin layers.

Although it is tempting to paint doors while they are still mounted, removing them and placing them on sawhorses makes the job much easier and prevents paint drips on the furniture.

Don’t worry – with your own effort and care, you can successfully transform your doors, even if they were not originally designed to be simply painted.

Do you need to do this on short notice? I would remove the doors, lightly sand them, and then paint them with a primer plus a good interior lacquer. For furniture like Besta, this is still, in my opinion, the best solution if you don’t want to spend a lot of time and effort on it.
