Hello everyone, I’m looking for effective, child-safe solutions to secure the doors of the IKEA BESTÅ system. Our little explorers often find it too tempting to open the cabinets, which is not only annoying but can also be dangerous. We need a way to lock the doors so they remain inaccessible to toddlers without relying on complicated tools or causing permanent damage. Does anyone have experience or specific recommendations on what works best for the BESTÅ doors? Thanks in advance for the tips!

Magnetic child safety locks are great. They can be easily installed from the inside, with no external modifications needed. They work perfectly with BESTÅ. No screws are necessary.

For the latter, simple clip locks may no longer be secure enough, as the child can quickly figure out how the mechanisms work.

Absolutely. Children develop dexterity very quickly. When it comes to mechanical locks, it’s important to consider the model and mechanism, such as the force needed to open them and whether there is any hidden release mechanism.

Also, I recommend using the hard-to-reach or higher shelves whenever possible.

That’s a very important point. In general, creating a safe environment can also be achieved through some furniture reorganization, which is often underestimated.

I would like to ask Luana39 if, besides the child safety aspect, there are any load-bearing or aesthetic requirements—for example, whether a specific color or material is preferred to match the interior?

Magnetic closure on the inside, no tools required on the outside. Children cannot reach it. Simple solution.

Thanks in advance for the initial information! My children are 2 and 4 years old, both very curious and playful. Unfortunately, hardly anything remains undiscovered. It is important to me to find a solution that does not cause permanent damage and looks as neat as possible. Screws are ideally not an option, since I might want to rearrange or sell the furniture later. Visually, it should remain inconspicuous, so obvious latches are out. Magnetic solutions sound promising, but are they really childproof at this age? Or is there experience that a persistent child might still manage to open them?

Magnetic solutions sound good, but are they really child-resistant at that age?

I have children that age myself, and it works very well for us. The magnetic force is set so that small fingers don’t get much leverage. Of course, with a lot of patience, children sometimes find ways, but by then they usually have lost interest. With the BESTÅ system, the locks are hardly visible and don’t disrupt the design. Another advantage: the doors stay flawless without screws.

Just to add: Children are real problem solvers when they want something. That doesn’t mean safety measures are pointless — rather, it’s best to combine them thoughtfully with other strategies.

- Magnetic locks are usually sufficient for your child’s age
- Combining them with furniture placement and deliberate storage can further discourage kids
- If you want to keep your furniture undamaged for resale, adhesive products or magnetic systems are generally recommended

By the way: Have you ever checked out IKEA’s own child safety products? Some models are perfect for BESTÅ doors.
