Hello everyone,

I would like to know if there is an app that allows virtual planning of Ikea Platsa furniture. Specifically, I want to be able to insert the modular elements of the Platsa series into different room sizes and layouts to get a realistic idea of the final result before purchasing. Ideally, the app should also offer options to try out various colors and fronts as well as configure storage variants. I’ve heard that Ikea offers its own tools, but they are often not very specific or can be cumbersome to use. Does anyone have experience with an app that works well specifically for Platsa? And how accurate and user-friendly are these planning tools? Thanks in advance!

Hi Bentu,

I can fully understand that detailed planning is important with Platsa, especially since the modules can be combined so flexibly. I personally searched for a good app for a long time and found that the official Ikea app basically works, but can be a bit clunky at times, especially when precisely placing the parts.

There are also third-party apps that offer a wider range of design options and are more intuitive to use, but they often lack a specific Platsa library. So you have to balance ease of use against accurate model representation. It would be interesting to know if anyone here is familiar with a perfect mix. How have you been handling this so far?

Ikea offers the Ikea Home Planner app, which you can use. It also includes Platsa furniture. Simply enter the room dimensions, select the furniture, and arrange it.

When choosing a suitable planning tool for Ikea Platsa furniture, it should be noted that Ikea usually provides its own "Ikea Home Planner" software, which is modular and covers the common series. This software offers the following features:
- Selection of room dimensions
- Positioning of Platsa components with precise measurements
- Changing front colors and materials
- Storage options and accessories

However, there are practical reports that the software can sometimes be unstable and not intuitive for all users. Third-party planning apps often provide a better user experience flow but do not always include the full Ikea product range—especially not the relatively new Platsa system.

In summary, the Ikea Home Planner remains the best choice if accuracy and product compatibility are a priority.

I can definitely confirm that. I recently tried to integrate my new Platsa modules into an external 3D room planner app. Unfortunately, the product wasn’t available as a pre-made model. I then attempted to enter the dimensions manually, which was quite complicated due to the varying depths (e.g., 35 cm (14 inches), 60 cm (24 inches)) and the specific connection elements.

For precise planning, I always recommend using the original Ikea tool, even if it can be a bit cumbersome at times. There you not only get exact measurements down to the centimeter, but also the guaranteed compatibility details.

Question: It would be interesting to know how accurate your room dimensions are and if you plan any special customizations – maybe someone has tips for alternative approaches?

Thanks for the hint! My room measures quite precisely 3.75 m (12.3 ft) wide and 2.9 m (9.5 ft) deep, with a sloped ceiling on one side. That’s why the tool also needs to be flexible enough to represent such special features. I mainly want to use the Platsa modules as storage solutions along one wall, combining different heights and depths to optimize the use of the space.

Are there any apps that can handle more complex room shapes well, like awkward corners or sloped ceilings? Or is the Ikea Home Planner already pretty good for this?
