Is there a way to use a Pax wardrobe without fixing it to the wall? I am planning to set up an Ikea Pax wardrobe in my rental apartment, but I want to avoid drilling or screwing into the walls to prevent any damage. My goal is to make the wardrobe as stable and secure as possible without attaching it to the wall. Are there any proven alternatives or specific products that allow for this kind of use, perhaps through weight balancing, special feet, or innovative stabilizers? Any ideas, experiences, or recommendations would be helpful, as I want to avoid the risk of it tipping over but cannot make a permanent installation on the wall.

Basically, the hanging system of the Pax and its intended wall fittings are designed to securely anchor the wardrobe, as it can tip over under load otherwise. However, there are some solutions you can try if you accept certain compromises and keep safety in mind.

One option is using heavy base plates or weights placed on the wardrobe’s bottom panel or even on the outside sides to lower the center of gravity. It is important that the load is evenly distributed to prevent tipping.

Some users also employ special furniture connectors or clamp systems that can be tensioned between the ceiling and the wardrobe without screws. Although these are usually used for shelving units, they can work with wardrobes as long as the ceiling is strong enough.

Another idea is heavy-duty caster wheels with brakes and locks that prevent the wardrobe from sliding. While these cannot fully prevent tipping, they can stop it from sliding away.

I’m interested if you have a specific model or room conditions, which would allow more precise advice. The most important aspect is always securing against tipping, especially if there are children or pets in the household.

Without wall anchoring, the Pax is very unstable. It is best to place heavy items at the bottom to prevent tipping. Alternatively, you can use tension rods from floor to ceiling that do not damage the wall or ceiling. This provides stability.

I can only agree with that, as I hesitated a long time before setting up my Pax without wall anchoring. At first, I was also afraid it might fall, especially with small children in the house. What helped me was storing heavy clothing and shoes in the lower section; that already adds a lot of stability.

That sounds interesting. Do you have personal experience with such tension systems? I was a bit concerned about the load on the ceiling – in older apartments, that’s not always advisable.

In general, I would recommend weighing the options carefully, since tipping over can be a serious hazard. I hope you find a practical and safe solution.

To safely use an IKEA Pax wardrobe without fixing it to the wall, I recommend the following:

- Use a tension rod designed specifically for furniture. It should be easily adjustable, and the ceiling must be load-bearing. This provides stability without drilling into the walls.

- Distribute heavy items such as shoes and books in the lower part of the wardrobe to lower the center of gravity.

- Make sure not to overload the wardrobe and regularly check that the tension device is securely in place.

- Alternatively, furniture brackets that clamp rather than require drilling can be used if the ceiling height allows.

Please note that these alternatives cannot fully replace wall anchoring, and safety should always be the top priority.

The simple answer is: yes, but with some limitations. Without wall mounting, the cabinet is always more prone to tipping. For a long-term and secure solution, I would still recommend looking for ways to at least temporarily secure the cabinet. If that’s not an option, tension rods between floor and ceiling are the best compromise, provided the ceiling is smooth and sturdy.

A less secure option is to place heavy shelves and weights at the bottom, but this does not replace proper anchoring. There are also some clamp systems available, but these have their limits, especially with large or tall models like Pax.

In summary: if you don’t want to drill into the wall, first check the load-bearing capacity of your ceiling, then use a tension rod for stabilization. Otherwise, you’ll need to rely on heavy contents to prevent tipping, which never provides a 100% guarantee.
