Hello everyone,

I am currently considering whether there is a way to retrofit my Ikea Pax cabinets with a soft-close mechanism. Specifically, I’m wondering if there are compatible soft-close hinges or add-on parts that can be installed on the existing doors without significantly altering the original door or the cabinet frame.

It is important to me that the function works reliably and that the doors close not only gently but also quietly. Has anyone had experience with retrofit solutions or can recommend products that are suitable for this?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Yes, there are compatible soft-close hinges from third-party manufacturers that can be installed on PAX doors. Simply replace the existing hinges with soft-close versions. Alternatively, soft-close dampers can be retrofitted, which are attached externally to the hinge.

Hello naunon,

I can provide you with a brief guide on retrofitting soft-close mechanisms for IKEA PAX doors:

- First, check which type of hinges your doors use (standard, push-to-open, or folding door).
- For standard interior doors, there are soft-close hinges available from IKEA itself or compatible third-party suppliers.
- Installation usually involves completely replacing the hinges. The mounting process is similar to that of the original IKEA hinges.
- If you don’t want to replace the hinges, you can attach separate soft-close dampers to the hinge, which slow down the closing.
- It is important to ensure that the new parts are compatible with the thickness and fastening method of your doors.

If you provide more details about your door model, I can help you more specifically!

Hello naunon,

to answer your question in more detail: Ikea PAX doors are usually attached with clip-on hinges, which are identical to those used by many other furniture manufacturers. That’s why many standard soft-close hinges work as replacements.

The process step-by-step:

- Remove the doors and unclip the existing hinges.
- Choose soft-close hinges that fit a 35 mm drilling pattern (common for PAX).
- Install the new hinges, possibly making small adjustments to the drilling positions if the screw holes don’t match exactly.

Common mistakes:

- Using hinges that are too large or too small and don’t fit precisely.
- Soft-close dampers positioned incorrectly, leading to poor functionality.

An alternative is external soft-close dampers mounted on the inside of the door. However, these are visibly noticeable and less elegant.

Have you checked the original hinge model number? Or the door thickness? That could make it easier to identify the right option.

Thanks for the tips! The doors are about 2cm (0.8 inches) thick and currently use the standard PAX hinges (modified clip-on, approximately 35mm (1.4 inches) drilling pattern). If there are soft-close hinges with the same drilling pattern, that would be ideal.

Are there soft-close replacement parts from well-known manufacturers that specifically fit IKEA PAX? Or are modifications unavoidable?

The standard PAX hinge cup bore with a 35 mm (1.4 inch) diameter is an industry standard. Therefore, several manufacturers offer compatible soft-close hinges that can be installed directly. Adjustments are usually unnecessary if the door thickness and hinge type match.

Well-known brands include Hettich, Blum, and Grass. They offer hinges with soft-close functionality that are often compatible with Ikea. However, check whether the hinge cup mounting (clip-on or screw-on version) is the same.

An exception is folding or sliding doors in the PAX system, where other solutions are recommended.
