Hello everyone,

I have a KALLAX shelf from IKEA, and unfortunately one of the glass inserts has cracked. Since I would prefer not to replace the entire insert, I’m wondering if there are replacement glass inserts available at hardware stores that could be used instead of the original glass panel.

Are there standardized sizes or alternative products that can be purchased at hardware stores or specialty retailers that are compatible with KALLAX? Or are the glass inserts custom-cut and only available directly from IKEA?

I would appreciate practical advice and tips, especially regarding whether replacement parts can be purchased at all, and if so, how proper fit is ensured.

Thanks in advance!

That’s a good question. Often, hardware stores assume you either need original replacement parts or that you will order entirely new custom-cut glass.

However, it’s worth questioning how “standardized” these inserts really are. IKEA often uses special dimensions that differ from typical hardware store sizes. Do you have the exact measurements of the glass insert?

It’s also important to consider the thickness and type of edge finishing, since replacement glass may not fit properly or be securely fixed otherwise.

I would also recommend checking with a local glazier to see if they can manufacture the glass, rather than relying solely on hardware store standards.

Hello!

It’s great that you brought this up! 🙂 I had a similar issue recently. For my KALLAX, I had a replacement glass panel cut directly at the home improvement store, and it worked perfectly!

The important thing is to take the exact measurements of the glass panel with you (length, width, and thickness) along with a clear description of the edge finish (whether polished or beveled edges). Most home improvement stores offer a cutting service that does this quickly.

So, if the shelf doesn’t have any custom sizes, you can definitely get replacement glass panels at the home improvement store without any problems. Good luck! 🙂

To add: IKEA does offer replacement glass inserts for KALLAX, but these are often only available while still in production or through customer service. The price for such original replacement parts is usually higher.

Hardware stores offer standard glass panes in common thicknesses (usually 4 mm or 5 mm) and sizes, which can be cut to measure. This works if your damaged insert has no special shape or edge features.

Please note:
- The exact thickness of the glass in the KALLAX
- Dimensions with tolerance
- Edge finishing (e.g., ground or polished)
- Safety (e.g., tempered glass or just float glass, with tempered glass being safer)

If ordering from a hardware store, be sure to consult with the glass cutting service, also regarding the fastening method in the shelf.

My tip: Measure carefully and check with your local hardware store if tempered glass can be cut to the required thickness.

Hardware stores cut glass to size, but for safety reasons, original replacement glass is often better.

If it is regular flat glass, you can also request a custom cut from a glazier.
