Hello everyone,

I am planning to convert an Ikea Hemnes into a sofa bed and am looking for a detailed guide on how to do this. It is important for me to have a step-by-step explanation on how to modify the sofa so that it is stable and comfortable to use as a bed.

Does such a guide already exist, or do you have any tips on the best approach, what tools are needed, and any special considerations to keep in mind for the Hemnes model?

I would greatly appreciate any detailed advice and shared experiences!

There is no official instruction from Ikea for this.

My tip: You need to remove the seat surface and build a slatted bed base support. You can use the cushion as a mattress or alternatively place a thin mattress on top.

Hello learken,

I have put together a small overview on this topic that might help you:

- First, completely clear out the sofa and remove the cushions.
- Check the fastenings of the seat base, which are usually screws on the underside.
- Carefully remove the seat base to make room for a modified slatted frame.
- Build a slatted frame in the appropriate size to replace the seat base and serve as a sleeping surface.
- Make sure the frame rests securely and stably on the existing guides or side supports.
- Use a suitable mattress, possibly a thin foam mattress, which you place on the slatted frame.
- Tips: Sand down any rough edges to prevent damage to fabrics and mattresses.

Tools you will need include a screwdriver, possibly a cordless drill, sandpaper, and maybe wood glue or small wood screws.

Potential issue: Stability is important, so test the construction multiple times before final use.

If you build any parts yourself, pay close attention to measurements, otherwise it won’t fit perfectly.

I hope this helps you already!

Wow, great idea with the renovation! The Hemnes isn’t really designed as a sofa bed, but with some skill, you can definitely make it work!

Definitely trust yourself to do it, even if it sounds complicated at first.

Maybe you can find some help with the assembly or from friends who have the right tools – it’s fun and can save you a lot of money in the end!

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out!

That’s exactly what I wanted to emphasize, since the Hemnes is primarily designed as seating furniture and dressers, not as a sleeping surface.

To add: there are variations where you remove the seat and then build a sturdy platform from wooden slats, which you cover with a mattress. This is more of a DIY solution, but with proper planning, it can be very stable and comfortable.

If you plan to use it frequently, I would even recommend custom-cutting a thin foam topper that fits the dimensions well.

The key is measuring and adjusting the components—there is no official conversion guide from Ikea.

Regarding stability: Anyone planning to modify the Hemnes should pay special attention to the load-bearing capacity of the side panels and the seating surface.

The Hemnes sofa models are not designed to function as beds. Therefore, I recommend reinforcing the frame with additional supports, such as metal brackets or extra crossbeams.

If it’s for occasional use, a simple slatted base might be sufficient. For regular or permanent use, I definitely recommend professional reinforcement.

Also: Use appropriate screws (Spax or similar) that are long enough but will not damage the frame.
