Hello everyone,

I am currently considering whether the Ikea Pax wardrobe system is really suitable for a children's room. My question is: Is Ikea Pax also appropriate for a kids’ bedroom? Specifically, I am wondering if the size, stability, and customization options of this wardrobe system meet the requirements of a child’s room—especially considering changing needs as children grow and safety for younger kids. I am also interested in whether it provides enough storage space and how flexible the interior layout is, particularly for clothes, toys, and school supplies.

Perhaps some of you have already had experience with this? I look forward to your helpful answers and any advice on what to pay attention to when buying.

That’s a valid question, especially since children’s rooms often have different requirements than adult bedrooms. In general, the Pax system is very flexible and can be customized individually. However, my main concern is the stability and safety for younger children. Pax wardrobes are quite tall and must be securely fixed to the wall, as Ikea also recommends. Otherwise, there is a risk of tipping. This is a safety aspect that must be given high priority, particularly for small children.

In this area, the system scores well. The many drawers, compartments, and optional accessories allow for effective organization. However, I would recommend carefully considering what you want to store in advance, since making changes later is possible but often requires effort.

To summarize: Pax is suitable if wall fixing is ensured for safety and if you are aware of the system’s high flexibility. For very young children, I would advise caution.

Securing the wardrobe to the wall is not just a recommendation but a necessity. According to IKEA safety information, these wardrobes can tip over easily if not anchored—a serious risk, especially for children.

- Stability: The system is stable as long as it is assembled correctly.
- Flexibility: Modular interior fittings allow customization to accommodate clothing, toys, or school supplies.
- Material: The surfaces are melamine-coated and easy to maintain, making them suitable for children’s rooms.

As a child grows, individual components such as clothes rails or drawer inserts can be replaced to adjust the storage space. However, this adjustment is not always inexpensive or quick.

Overall, from my point of view, there is no objection to using Pax wardrobes in a child’s room, provided that all safety measures are consistently followed.

I have personally furnished two children’s rooms with the Ikea Pax system, so I would like to share a few tips to keep in mind when using it for a child’s room:

1. Secure installation: Wall mounting is essential. It’s best to check in advance whether you have suitable anchors for your wall type.
2. Doors vs. sliding doors: Sliding doors are often safer and more practical for children, as they prevent fingers from getting caught.
3. Flexible interior layout: Pax offers many inserts – clothes rods, drawers, shelves, baskets. Plan the layout so everything is easily accessible.
4. Height adapted to the children: You can buy cabinets in heights of 201 cm (79 inches) or 236 cm (93 inches). I recommend the smaller size for children, as the taller version is harder to use and potentially less safe.
5. Material and cleaning: The smooth surfaces are easy to maintain and durable, which is important in children’s rooms.

Regarding storage: Toys and school supplies are well stored in baskets, while clothing fits well on rods and in drawers. The large drawers, in particular, are very practical.

My conclusion: Pax is very suitable when you pay special attention to secure installation and appropriate organization. It should be noted that the system requires a complex assembly and planning, but its flexibility is hard to match at a comparable price.
