ᐅ Is a Satellite System Still Necessary for New Builds, or Is IPTV Sufficient?

Hello everyone,
Please forgive me if I haven’t searched through hundreds of pages. My basic question is whether you still consider a satellite dish necessary or if you would just skip it altogether. About our profile: When we watch TV, it’s exclusively public broadcasting channels and no private channels. However, mostly we watch on-demand content like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and so on. In this context, we’re really starting to doubt whether we can save ourselves the 850 EUR gross. What do you think? Should we just stream the public broadcasting channels via Apple TV, or is it still better to have a satellite dish installed?
Thanks & good luck, Commanderchen

hampshire11 Nov 2019 16:03We finally got a 100 Mbps VDSL connection, but it is also used by several heavy power users. This sometimes causes instability in the line, and the satellite dish, which is cleverly hidden between the two gable roofs on the flat roof section, provides some relief. Watching TV works without any issues.
If you don’t like metal dishes, you might want to check out Selfsat. They are significantly smaller than comparable satellite dishes with the same performance. I had one installed for 10 years in my old rental apartment because nothing else would fit on the balcony railing. Not a single failure, even after snow or storms. I plan to install one on my house as well. They are extremely unobtrusive, can be painted or covered with stickers, and are also available with unicable technology. More than sufficient for the one to two times a week when the TV is actually watched.

garfunkel12 Nov 2019 10:10I would mount the satellite dish wherever it’s simply easiest. I wouldn’t like putting it on the roof with tiles and conduit, etc.
Here, the dish is mounted under the eaves on the exterior wall, with a small hole drilled to run the cable inside the house—that’s it.
I also like the solution from undergasse43. It keeps the costs for the TV setup relatively low and shows that there are affordable options. I would simply ignore the occasional TV signal loss. It probably happens once or twice a year, and when it does, you either go to bed earlier or wait about 10 minutes until it works again...

SenorRaul712 Nov 2019 17:10I haven’t read all 22 pages, but what if you want to use Sky, for example? They don’t offer IPTV yet, right? I mean, you definitely have to choose between a cable or satellite receiver.
And how did you handle the roof installation after building your new home? Did you do it yourselves? The companies I want to hire all say they won’t work on a new roof because of warranty issues and possible conflicts with the roofer.
