ᐅ Is a Satellite System Still Necessary for New Builds, or Is IPTV Sufficient?

Hello everyone,

Please forgive me if I haven’t searched through hundreds of pages. My basic question is whether you still consider a satellite dish necessary or if you would just skip it altogether. About our profile: When we watch TV, it’s exclusively public broadcasting channels and no private channels. However, mostly we watch on-demand content like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and so on. In this context, we’re really starting to doubt whether we can save ourselves the 850 EUR gross. What do you think? Should we just stream the public broadcasting channels via Apple TV, or is it still better to have a satellite dish installed?

Thanks & good luck, Commanderchen

Wooden garden house? Underground cable into the house? It’s a new build. All options are open.

@Nordlys
Yes, good idea. Once the garden shed is in place, it would be located on the north side, so it would be blocked by the house and there would be no clear view of the satellite.
I’m still thinking mainly about the installation on the facade, roof soffit, and overhang...
An attic escape window would also be necessary then...

Well, then just attach it to the facade; this is common practice. Even with ETICS (External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems), it’s no problem with proper planning.

But even without that, you can simply use thermal anchors, and that works well.

Yes, that would of course be the best option. However, you have to create a hole inward for the cable(s) through the ETICS / masonry. But isn’t this rather an unfavorable approach? Because of some kind of thermal bridge that might occur there?

I found something that matches what I have in mind, with as little effort as possible:
It can be found from the main online retailer using this number: B007ATMW6Y
Due to the existing roof box, it’s definitely not possible to install it there, but maybe on the gable side, provided there are visible roof beams.

Today I received a quote from the roofer for the satellite TV preparation, including the antenna flashing tile and the antenna mast (90cm [35 inches] high for dishes up to 1.2m [4 feet]) for over-rafter installation. Nearly €100 net for the tile and about €220 net for the antenna mast, each including delivery and installation. The price for the antenna mast seems a bit steep to me (the tile too, actually).

The price seems fair...

Also, the mast would need to be on the north-facing roof side and extend above the ridge for line of sight to the south. Is 90cm [35 inches] even sufficient for that? I’d rather not use the south-facing roof for a planned photovoltaic system.

Do you actually intend to cover the entire roof with panels?

For now, I want to keep the option of a satellite system open, or maybe I’ll just install the flashing tile and add the antenna mast later.
Perhaps someone has some other ideas?

Thanks a lot!

Talk to your electrician about running the cables through empty conduit up to the rafters plus an extra 2–3m (6–10 feet). That way, you can easily install the satellite dish later without even needing to buy a tile now. By the way, there are flashing seal kits made of aluminum/plastic available for around €20 that are perfectly sufficient. The bracket costs about €60–100.
