ᐅ Is a Satellite System Still Necessary for New Builds, or Is IPTV Sufficient?

Hello everyone,

Please forgive me if I haven’t searched through hundreds of pages. My basic question is whether you still consider a satellite dish necessary or if you would just skip it altogether. About our profile: When we watch TV, it’s exclusively public broadcasting channels and no private channels. However, mostly we watch on-demand content like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and so on. In this context, we’re really starting to doubt whether we can save ourselves the 850 EUR gross. What do you think? Should we just stream the public broadcasting channels via Apple TV, or is it still better to have a satellite dish installed?

Thanks & good luck, Commanderchen

Why do so many people decide against it? Especially for new builds, a satellite system costs very little and provides "free" TV.

1200€ plus monthly fees if HD is desired.

All relevant channels can also be received via the internet.

Yes, but Entertain costs significantly more per month.

1&1 Internet = 20 euros
Telekom Internet + TV = 50 euros

Okay, maybe it’s just because I only watch Sky and nothing else.

But you are comparing apples and oranges.

A Zattoo Premium subscription costs 8€ per month. It includes recording features and HD quality, but with private channels only. There is no initial investment and no sensitivity to weather conditions.
For the same 8€, you get Magenta TV without a telecom connection.
Sky has to be streamed through their app.

I would pay to avoid watching "free TV." Watching some minor celebrities on Pro7 playing little games? Or being told how emotional the singing performance of contestant number 0815 was? Terrible...

On the other hand, you would just shake your head if you judged my Twitch usage.

Satellite TV pays for itself very quickly.

For me, it would have been 15 years when comparing satellite investment versus monthly fees for a streaming service. However, the streaming service already includes HD for the private channels, while this costs extra on satellite. If you factor that in, the payback period is over 30 years.
