Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought an IKEA Billy bookcase and noticed that it feels a bit wobbly under heavier loads. Although I have already used the included wall fasteners, the overall stability does not seem optimal, especially when the bookcase is fully loaded. My specific question is: What practical and safe measures can be taken to significantly increase the stability of a BILLY bookcase without damaging the furniture or affecting its appearance? I am thinking of additional fasteners, reinforcements, or possibly special inserts. Are there any experiences or proven tips? Thanks in advance!

For cavity anchors in drywall, I recommend using toggle bolts or metal anchors, as they provide significantly better holding power than simple expansion plugs. These are designed for hollow walls and prevent pull-out.

Außerdem interessiere ich mich für den Vorschlag mit den zusätzlichen Querstreben.

If you don’t want to disassemble the shelf, there are flat metal brackets that can be attached inside the side panels at the top and bottom without affecting the visible surfaces. They increase lateral rigidity. Alternatively, vertical supports can be installed inside, such as thin wooden slats fixed with screws. The shelf’s outward appearance remains unchanged.

In general, the taller and more heavily loaded the shelf, the more important these reinforcements become. If you move the shelf frequently, screw-fastened solutions are preferable to adhesives or nails.
