Hello everyone, I have a small but annoying problem with my IKEA Malm dresser: the catch inside the drawer (the small metal or plastic hook that prevents the drawer from being pulled out completely) is broken. A tiny part of the catch has snapped off, so the drawer no longer stays securely in place and often falls out if you're not careful.
My question is: does anyone know if IKEA offers replacement parts for these drawer catches, or if you have to rely on third-party suppliers? And if there are no original replacement parts, does anyone have tips on how to repair or replace it effectively yourself? I have already checked the IKEA online store, but these specific catches are not listed there.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey, great that you described the problem so clearly! 🙂 Sometimes it’s really frustrating when such small things break!
If IKEA doesn’t help, you can also look for replacement parts on eBay or Amazon – you can often find affordable spare hooks there! And if you want, you can even 3D print them yourself, if you have a printer!
Cheer up, you’ll definitely fix it! 🙂

Here is a brief overview for anyone who is also having issues with broken Malm drawer hooks:
1. IKEA spare parts service: Usually, IKEA provides all necessary components, but the drawer hooks in particular are not always listed in the standard online store. Therefore, I recommend calling customer service or asking directly at the store.
2. Third-party suppliers: Platforms like eBay or Amazon often offer compatible replacement hooks. Be sure to check the dimensions and material carefully to ensure the hooks are sturdy and fit properly.
3. DIY solution: If neither spare parts nor replacements are available, you can improvise with small metal hooks or even thick wire. Make sure the construction is secure and does not pose any risk to the drawer or the user.
Summary: Please check IKEA first, then alternative retailers, and if you have the skills, feel free to make your own. If needed, you are welcome to get back here and I can take a closer look at the details.

IKEA offers spare parts, but the hooks for Malm drawers are often not listed individually. Thanks, that helps me a lot! I called IKEA customer service again, and they said they don’t sell these hooks separately, only complete drawer runners.

Does anyone have experience with how to attach such a replacement best, so the drawer doesn’t jam or become unstable? Are there any materials that work particularly well?

JEREMIAH3817 Jan 2022 09:16I can well understand how frustrating a broken hook on the Malm drawer can be. I experienced the same and was initially annoyed because original replacement parts were hard to come by.
What helped me was getting small metal hairpin clips and installing them in that spot. This restored the function almost equally well. Of course, it doesn’t look original, but it held up nicely and I no longer had issues when pulling the drawer out.
Sometimes it also helps to ask Ikea for a return or exchange; they can be accommodating if you’ve only had the furniture for a short time and a part is defective.
