Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my IKEA Malm desk: the drawers no longer slide smoothly, and I suspect that the runners, meaning the drawer slides, are worn out or damaged. Before ordering completely new slides, I would like to know if anyone has instructions or tips for replacing the drawer slides on the Malm desk.

Specifically, I am interested in:
- How can I remove the existing slides without damaging the furniture?
- Are there spare parts from IKEA that fit directly?
- What tools do I need for this?
- Are there any tricks to ensure the drawers run smoothly and evenly again after replacement?

I look forward to your experiences and advice.

Thanks for the tip about Blum or Hettich, KESIRI.

So I should pay special attention to the fit, right? Our Malm drawers are about 30cm (12 inches) wide, and I’m mainly looking for affordable IKEA replacement parts, if possible. Has anyone had experience with whether IKEA replacement parts work better or worse than the original slides that came with the furniture?

Also, I would like to know if replacing the parts affects the drawer’s stability, especially if you have to repeatedly unclip and reattach the clips.

In my experience, the IKEA replacement parts usually match the original rails in quality because they are identical. The level of smoothness and performance changes very little. Wear typically occurs due to abrasion of the plastic components or dirt buildup.

Regarding stability: As long as the rails are properly snapped and screwed into place, there are no disadvantages. It is important to carefully disengage the clips during removal to avoid breakage. Alternatively, periodically tightening the mounting screws can reduce any existing play in the mechanism.

I replaced my MALM drawer slides myself. It was important to completely remove the drawer first and then carefully release the plastic locks using a flat screwdriver.

I ordered new rails directly from IKEA, and they arrived within a week. Replacing each drawer took about 20 minutes.

When replacing, always pay close attention to the alignment. Rails must run parallel; otherwise, the drawer will stick. Tighten the screws carefully, not too much. Otherwise, the rail may bend.

Exactly. In addition, I recommend thoroughly cleaning the rails and screws before replacing them. Often, simply removing dust and old grease is enough to improve performance without having to replace everything right away.
