Good morning everyone, I have a specific question about replacing damaged parts on furniture from IKEA’s Malm series. Specifically, I’m wondering how to proceed if, for example, a drawer or a side panel is damaged due to wear or an accident. Is it possible to easily replace individual parts yourself, or do you need special tools or expertise? I’m also interested in whether IKEA offers certain replacement parts directly and how long the delivery times typically are. Has anyone had experience with this or can share helpful tips for a smooth repair process? Thanks in advance!

Hey Tarosan, it’s great that you’re confident enough to tackle the repair yourself! 🙂 I once replaced a drawer on my Malm dresser – it’s really quite simple! IKEA offers replacement parts, but you often need to know the exact part number. A good tip is to download the assembly instructions from IKEA, as they list all the parts with their numbers. Usually, you only need a Phillips screwdriver and sometimes a hex key. Ordering parts from IKEA can take a little time, but most people are patient 🙂 Good luck!!

Exactly, that’s the key point. I recommend checking the serial number directly on the furniture or on the receipt before placing an order. This ensures that you order the correct part. If no serial number can be found, photos and detailed descriptions can help when contacting IKEA customer service. Also, make sure the assembly instructions for your specific model are available, as there are indeed variations of the Malm series.

Exactly, it’s great that Tarosan is showing concrete interest here! 🙂 Last year, I replaced the drawer sides – it was really quick! If something breaks, just call the service department at IKEA or check online for spare parts. They often deliver promptly, and the parts fit perfectly because everything is modular. I also changed the hinges myself once – it’s not complicated at all! Don’t be discouraged by that, just get started and keep going!

To be honest, I wonder whether Ikea really intends to make replacing individual parts easy or if they prefer customers to buy new items instead. Sure, the documentation and spare parts are available – but who carefully checks every single screw and number? Often, it’s a legal balancing act involving goodwill limits. Personally, I think it’s more practical to invest in sturdier furniture when buying. Still, if you really want to repair something, the key is patience and thorough research.

Order replacement parts directly from IKEA. Find the part number in the assembly instructions or on the furniture piece. Tools needed: screwdriver, Allen key. Remove the damaged part and insert the new one. Follow the instructions. Done.
