Hello everyone, I have a question about IKEA Besta systems, specifically about the back panels.

Some back panels on my Besta shelving unit are damaged—they are either torn or scratched in a way that is very noticeable. Now I want to replace these back panels, but I’m not sure how to do this practically without taking apart the entire unit or causing further damage.

Is there a step-by-step guide or any tips on how to cleanly and easily replace the back panels on an assembled Besta shelving unit? What tools are needed, and what is the best approach to ensure the new back panels fit securely and neatly?

I look forward to your experiences and advice!

It is best to empty the shelf completely from front to back first. Then, carefully loosen the back panels at the top using a spatula. Usually, they are simply slotted in. Insert the new back panel, press it down, and you’re done. No special tools are required.

This is a sensible first step, as it provides unobstructed access to the back panel.

Regarding the procedure: IKEA Besta back panels are usually made of thin hardboard material and are inserted into a groove located on the inside of the side panels.

- Removing all the shelves and doors first gives you more room to maneuver.
- The damaged back panels can be carefully pried out of the groove using a thin, flat spatula or a similar levering tool.
- Caution is advised to avoid damaging the side panels and the groove.
- It is recommended to check the new back panel for accurate dimensions before installation (often 3 mm (0.12 inches) thick, cut to size).
- Then insert the back panel into the groove and press it firmly from top to bottom so it fits snugly.

Tools: a spatula, optionally rubberized gloves for a better grip, and a smooth work surface are helpful during the replacement.

This approach minimizes the risk of having to disassemble the shelf extensively and protects the existing furniture parts.

I can relate to your situation; I was frustrated with a similar case before.

My advice: Take your time and work carefully and methodically. I started by emptying all the compartments, then removed the doors to make access easier. It’s important to apply only minimal pressure to the side panels when removing the back panels—don’t use force.

If the back panels are glued or fit very tightly, patience is key. Using a heat gun on a low setting can help soften the material slightly, making it more flexible.

I also found it helpful to lightly sand or clean the edges of the back panels before reinstalling them. Finally, press everything firmly in place to avoid the shelving unit wobbling.

Don’t worry, with some care it will work out. Good luck!
