Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to optimize my small bedroom using IKEA BESTÅ furniture, as the space is very limited and I want to create as much storage as possible without overcrowding or visually overwhelming the room.

My specific question is: How can I use the BESTÅ system to make the most efficient use of space in a small bedroom, providing enough storage for clothes and personal items while still allowing enough room to move around and maintaining an airy feel? Are there any best practices for assembling or adding to the system that have proven particularly effective?

It would also be important for me to know whether versions with doors or open shelves work better, and how lighting or storage accessories can be integrated into the system.

Thank you for your tips!

Hello Anatol54,

I’d be happy to share some suggestions regarding your IKEA BESTÅ system. The BESTÅ system is very flexible and can be well adapted to small rooms if you keep a few points in mind:

- Use the taller modules to create more vertical storage space, so you avoid blocking too much floor area.
- Doors are especially useful if you want to keep the room looking tidy. Open shelves can quickly appear cluttered, even if they are practical.
- Combine different cabinet modules: a mix of drawers for small clothing items and doors for bulkier things usually works best.
- For small rooms, I strongly recommend considering the cabinet depth—often the shallower versions (around 40cm (16 inches)) are better to maintain freedom of movement.
- Indirect lighting inside or above the cabinets creates a pleasant atmosphere and helps make the furniture stand out subtly in the room.

It is also important to consider how the room is used: if you need a desk or bedside table, you can integrate flexible elements from BESTÅ as additions.

Feel free to reach out with any questions—I’m happy to help!

To approach this question professionally, I recommend the following structured method:

- First, accurately measure the room area and especially the usable wall surfaces to select the BESTÅ module that fits precisely.
- Prefer modular units with a depth of 40 cm (16 inches) or less to avoid narrow walkways.
- Use a combination of closed doors and drawers to reduce visual clutter and organize storage efficiently.
- Consider customization options with integrated interior fittings, such as adjustable shelves, drawers with dividers, or organizers, to optimize storage structure.
- If needed, use the surfaces of the BESTÅ units as additional shelf space, but be careful not to make the room feel overcrowded.

Also take room lighting into account: LED strips attached to or inside the modules can not only improve visibility but also positively influence the room’s atmosphere.

These recommendations are based on proven methods for designing small bedrooms using the BESTÅ system.

This is important. Also:

- Use wall mounting with BESTÅ to save floor space.
- Choose versions without doors if you can keep things organized well.
- Combinations with drawers save more space.

I can only agree with that – it really helps me keep the bedroom from feeling cluttered.

I would like to add that it was also important for me to have flexible storage since my storage needs have changed. BESTÅ allows this flexibility through interchangeable inserts and adjustable compartments.

Aesthetically, I find a minimalist color scheme for the BESTÅ units (e.g., white fronts) pleasant, as it makes the room appear larger. When you then customize with accessories or textiles, the room stays inviting and cozy.

How do you handle the lighting? I spontaneously installed small LED strips inside; they take up little space but make a big difference.
