Hello everyone, I am currently assembling my Ikea Besta shelving unit. However, I find the installation of the drawers quite tricky, especially inserting the drawer slides and precisely adjusting the drawer fronts. It feels somewhat fiddly, and I get the impression that handling, particularly when fitting the drawers, could benefit from more convenience and technical tips.
My question to the experienced Ikea Besta builders in this forum is therefore quite specific: How can I make the drawer assembly for Ikea Besta easier? Are there special methods, tools, or tips that significantly simplify the process, help avoid mistakes, and make adjusting the drawer fronts more accurate? I would really appreciate detailed and practical advice, including common pitfalls to watch out for.

Hello Jonpi,
I’m familiar with this issue. When assembling the Ikea Besta drawers, it really helps to precisely align the drawer slides before fully tightening the screws. I recommend carefully assembling all parts loosely at first to get a feel for the mechanism. It is also important to thoroughly adjust the drawer fronts before final attachment – a screwdriver with fine threading is useful for the small adjustment screws. In many cases, it’s worth partially screwing in the fasteners for the front panel, making fine-tuning easier later on.
Common mistakes include tightening all screws too early and attaching or gluing the drawer fronts too rigidly. Take your time; the system is designed to allow some flexibility, which you should take advantage of.
Good luck with the assembly!

Hey @Jonpi, don’t worry, the drawer monster swallows everyone at the beginning—even me! 🙂 My tip: get two small helpers—one to hold the drawer and one for the front—this makes everything fit together much more smoothly.
Also, it’s worth investing in a small magnetic pickup tool. You can use it to retrieve screws and wall plugs from hard-to-reach spots, so you avoid frustration! And of course, follow the assembly order carefully, otherwise everything will wobble like a house of cards.
You’ve got to be able to laugh when the last cabinet breaks anyway 😉 Have fun figuring it out and keep at it!

Full agreement with the tips so far!
I really enjoyed installing the Besta drawers because I first drew a small diagram of the system – this really helps to understand how everything fits together!
A little insider tip from me: When inserting the drawer, slightly lift the rail on the side first; this makes the drawer slide much more smoothly and reduces the effort needed.
Sometimes it also helps to briefly lubricate moving parts with a bit of silicone grease – this makes the sliding action almost effortless. Give it a try, and I wish you great success and an enjoyable assembly! 😊

To optimize the assembly of the Ikea Besta drawers, I recommend a structured approach:
- Sort all individual parts before starting assembly and check for completeness
- Assemble the drawer slides fully first and test for smooth operation
- Do not tighten the drawer fronts permanently right away; instead, attach them temporarily and adjust as needed
- Adjust the front panel screws slowly and in small increments to achieve a precise fit
- Tighten screws and dowels only by hand initially to maintain flexibility, then secure them finally
It is also important to have a suitable workspace with enough room and lighting to avoid mistakes. Using a cordless drill with variable speed control further facilitates the handling.
