Hello everyone, I am currently assembling my Ikea Besta shelving unit. However, I find the installation of the drawers quite tricky, especially inserting the drawer slides and precisely adjusting the drawer fronts. It feels somewhat fiddly, and I get the impression that handling, particularly when fitting the drawers, could benefit from more convenience and technical tips.
My question to the experienced Ikea Besta builders in this forum is therefore quite specific: How can I make the drawer assembly for Ikea Besta easier? Are there special methods, tools, or tips that significantly simplify the process, help avoid mistakes, and make adjusting the drawer fronts more accurate? I would really appreciate detailed and practical advice, including common pitfalls to watch out for.

It’s interesting to see how varied the approaches are here. I wonder if the "easier" assembly of the drawers in the Ikea Besta system also depends on how well the instructions are understood and how familiar one is with the component tolerances.
One point I’d like to mention: there is certainly a limit to how much easier assembly can be, since the Besta system relies on standardized components whose fit is not always exact to the millimeter.
Therefore, it could be worth discussing whether slight modifications, such as sanding the side runners or adding felt pads or plastic spacers, might make assembly easier. However, these are nice-to-have measures and, of course, an intervention in the original construction method.
What are your thoughts?

1. Preparatory steps: sort and check all components
2. Screw the runners to the cabinet, making sure they are perfectly level
3. Assemble the drawer sides and, if necessary, use fine sandpaper to smooth out any small unevenness on the side edges
4. Insert and build the drawer bottom, but do not fully screw it in yet
5. Connect the runners on the drawer and carefully slide them into the cabinet runners (slightly tighten the runner while doing this)
6. Then carefully attach the drawer front, adjusting the depth and angle as needed
7. Tighten all screws by hand first, adjust if necessary, then fully tighten
Additionally, I recommend using a small spirit level to align the runners. This makes a noticeable difference when sliding the drawer in. It helps avoid unnecessary force and protects the mechanism.

It’s best to first tighten all the screws only loosely, assemble the drawer completely, and then tighten everything properly. This makes adjusting easier. I will definitely try that, thanks!

In many cases, it’s also worth partially screwing in the locking clips on the front, so fine adjustments are easier later. Do you mean that I shouldn’t fully tighten the small connectors between the front panel and the drawer, but should leave them flexible?
I also find ixlu1’s tip about installing the runner rails by slightly lifting them very interesting. I’ve always needed quite a bit of force, so that sounds like a great trick.
I’m also curious how you lubricate the rails and whether it actually helps long-term or if it tends to interfere with the components. Does anyone have reliable experience with this?
