Hello everyone,
I have been considering upgrading the look of my Ikea Besta shelving unit by adding a custom cladding that enhances both its appearance and functionality. I’m thinking of a tailored solution that fits the exact size and design of the Besta components, for example with side panels or some kind of door overlays to create a more harmonious overall look.
My question is: Which materials and design options would you recommend for such cladding that are easy to work with, durable, and can possibly be removed later without leaving any damage?
I’m also interested to hear if you have any experience combining wood, lacquered panels, or fabric coverings—and how you approached those projects.
I appreciate any tips, tricks, and insights!

I find your idea very interesting and believe that a cladding can give the Besta a completely new character. Generally, I recommend using MDF or HDF boards with a painted surface, as they are easy to work with and relatively durable.
When working with these materials, make sure to carefully seal the edges to prevent moisture absorption. For attachment, you can use screws or concealed mounting systems such as fittings, so the cladding can be easily removed later if you want to remodel.
If you prefer a fabric-covered surface, I would suggest starting with a sturdy base board and then adhering foam padding covered with a durable fabric. This looks sophisticated but is less resistant to mechanical stress.

Hello Quinn10,
to give you a practical answer, here is a structured guide on how to approach designing your Ikea Besta enclosure:
- Planning: Measure your Besta precisely and draw a construction plan that takes all sides into account.
- Material selection: MDF boards are excellent for painted surfaces, while plywood is better if you want a natural wood look.
- Cutting: Ideally, have the boards cut with millimeter precision at your local building or timber supply store.
- Surface treatment: Painting, veneering, or laminating are options. Make sure to use the appropriate primer.
- Fastening: Use concealed brackets or screw systems to make the enclosure removable without leaving marks.
- Tip: Work with edge banding to enhance the appearance of cut edges and make them more durable.
Avoid gluing the boards directly; this way you maintain maximum flexibility for modifications or disassembly.

I can completely understand how important it can be to customize your piece of furniture.
To make sure the whole process is enjoyable for you and not stressful, I would definitely recommend trying out small material samples first. You might even create a small test covering in a corner to see how it feels and looks.
I once tried fabric, which looked nice but was harder to clean. That’s why I later switched to painted wood panels – a bit less warm but easy to maintain. I hope this helps you a bit!

Hey Quinn10!!
Great idea to customize the Besta – it opens up so many possibilities!! 😊
I built a similar cover myself using thin plywood sheets, which I painted with acrylic paint in a warm gray. It looks really great and makes the furniture much more durable.
My tip: Ask the hardware store to bevel the edges for you right away, it makes sanding much easier and gives the whole project a professional finish!
Also, you might consider installing small LED strips on an inside surface – it really stands out and is a cool eye-catcher. Good luck with your project, I’m looking forward to seeing your results!
