Hello everyone, I noticed that the drawer slides on my IKEA Besta shelving unit are becoming increasingly stiff and sometimes stick a little. Before considering a complete replacement, I wanted to ask how to best lubricate the drawer slides to improve smoothness and ease of movement.
Specifically, I’m interested in which lubricant works best for the metal rails of the IKEA Besta drawers. Are traditional WD-40 type products recommended, or would specialized white grease or silicone sprays be better?
I’d also appreciate tips on the procedure: Do I need to fully remove the drawers, or can I simply pull out the slides and lubricate them in place? Which areas should be treated preferentially?
I look forward to your experiences and helpful advice, as I’d like to maintain the functionality of my Besta drawers in the long term.

WD-40 is not ideal because it evaporates and only provides short-term relief.Exactly, WD-40 is more of a quick fix than a long-term solution.
For my Besta drawers, I like to use a fine white lithium grease – it penetrates well and makes everything operate smoothly. Application is really simple: remove the drawer completely, wipe off any coarse dirt with a cloth, then apply a thin layer of grease to the runners, slide the drawer in and out to distribute it evenly.
Pro tip: don’t use too much, or it’ll just attract dust immediately. 😉
I’m curious if anyone else has any other clever tips!
To sustainably lubricate the drawer slides of IKEA Besta shelves, I recommend the following step-by-step process:
- Fully pull the drawer out of the shelf. Most slides have a locking mechanism that can be released by simultaneously lifting or pressing the side parts.
- Remove any dust, old lubricants, or other residues with a lint-free cloth; if necessary, clean with isopropanol.
- Use a high-quality lithium or white grease based on mineral oil, as these lubricants provide lasting adhesion and protection. Silicone sprays tend to remain superficial and can be displaced under load.
- Apply a thin, even layer of grease to the running rails. Pay special attention to the rollers or ball bearings, if present.
- Reinstall the drawer and open and close it several times fully to evenly distribute the grease.
This method ensures a durable and smooth drawer operation.

Great topic – I had the same problem with my Besta drawers!
Thanks to everyone for the tips about lithium grease and working cleanly. I can only confirm: proper lubrication really makes a difference!
I simply ordered some lithium grease, pulled out the drawers, cleaned them thoroughly, and applied a thin layer. After that, the drawers worked like they did on the first day!
It’s definitely worth it even for heavily used slides. Don’t forget: be patient and don’t use too much grease, or it will attract dirt.
Good luck to everyone tackling this! You’ve got this!
