Hello everyone,
I am planning to build a storage bench using Ikea Besta units. I want the bench to be stable enough, comfortable to sit on, and have easy access to the storage inside. My specific questions are:
- Which Besta units are best suited for the base?
- How can I create a secure seating surface that can easily support weight?
- What modifications are needed to convert the doors or flaps into storage access panels?
- Are there any tips for fastening the bench to ensure it is stable and durable?
Who has experience with a DIY project like this and can provide helpful tips or a step-by-step guide? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I really like the idea, especially when using the bench in a dressing room or hallway. For comfort, I used foam padding and an appropriate cover myself – it makes the seat much more comfortable.
Sometimes you might feel a bit unsure about the stability of the DIY project, especially if you don’t have much experience with wood. My advice is to work slowly and carefully, and to check all screw connections multiple times. This provides confidence.
It can also help to stabilize the bench at the bottom with small, decorative baseboards or feet – this keeps everything firmly on the floor and prevents slipping.
Has anyone done this before? I’m curious to know which upholstery materials or covers you have used.

That would be very helpful! I want to keep the frame as hidden as possible but still stable enough for everyday use.If you want to conceal the frame, it makes sense to position the cross beams made of plywood or spruce wood quite close to the sides and in the middle—specifically where the cabinets meet. This way, you can place them in the gaps that are not visible.
I would also recommend screwing the cross beams so that they connect with the back panel of the BESTA cabinets. This creates a solid unit.

Sometimes you feel a bit uncertain about the stability of the DIYHaving some respect for the project is okay, but with the right connections, the bench will be very stable. My tips:
- Use a cordless screwdriver with depth stop to avoid overdriving the screws.
- Work with guide strips and reference lines when drilling.
- Use high-quality screws.
If all this is done properly, you will enjoy your BESTA bench for a long time!
