Hello everyone,
I’m about to get an IKEA Besta shelving unit and want to prepare as best as possible for the assembly. I would like to know which tools are absolutely necessary for putting together the IKEA Besta. There are often lists with lots of tools, but some of them are probably unnecessary. For example, do you really need a cordless drill, or is a regular screwdriver enough?
I’m especially interested in tools that are essential for a solid and stable assembly—not just what might be nice to have, but what you really shouldn’t do without. Are there any special screwdrivers, bits, or other helpers that you would definitely recommend?
Also, are there any tips for making the assembly process somewhat more efficient?
I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

A cordless screwdriver with torque control is very helpful, but not absolutely necessary.I can fully confirm that. For Besta, such a tool really pays off, especially if you are assembling several modules and want to screw in the screws cleanly and evenly.
The basic equipment includes:
- Phillips screwdriver (PH2), preferably ergonomic
- Cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque (alternatively a good manual screwdriver, but that will take longer)
- Hammer for wall plugs
- The included Allen key, depending on the model
Some also recommend a spirit level, especially if the shelf is going to be mounted on a wall. However, you can easily use a smartphone level app instead.
If you’re assembling a Besta for the first time, take enough time and lay out all parts and tools clearly beforehand. This way, you can follow a structured approach step by step and avoid mistakes.
Good luck with assembling your Besta!

Also, a rubber mallet can be helpful if you want to tap in the back panel or other parts more gently. Otherwise, you risk damaging the surfaces.
I also recommend setting the cordless drill to a low torque setting; otherwise, screws can get over-tightened quickly – which is visible on the finished product and compromises stability.
If the torque is too high, it beats the material; too low, and you end up screwing with less control – it’s all about balancing screws and feel! No big deal though, a bit of fun is part of the process 😄
PS: Cable ties are a handy little tip if you want to neatly bundle cables or other items later on.
