Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to assemble a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and am wondering which tools are really useful to make the assembly as efficient and error-free as possible.

I have noticed that many people only use the included hex key, but I have read that some work better with a cordless drill or other special tools.

I would like to know:

1. Which tools have you used when assembling a Billy?
2. Are there any specific recommendations that make the assembly easier or help protect the screws from damage?
3. How important are screwdrivers or, for example, a hammer in the process?

I look forward to tips from people with firsthand experience, especially those who have assembled the bookshelf multiple times.

Good morning,

regarding your question: The fastest and cleanest method is actually using a cordless drill/driver, preferably one with adjustable torque. This helps prevent overtightening the screws and protects the material.

The included hex key is theoretically sufficient, but it is quite tedious and time-consuming. A small Phillips screwdriver is useful if you want to adjust the screws by hand.

A hammer is really only necessary if you plan to use wall plugs for mounting on the wall.

I can understand that well, as I also first considered which tools are really necessary. At the beginning, I was a bit uncertain because I was afraid the shelf might be damaged by incorrect screwing.

In my experience, a cordless drill is very helpful, especially when you are driving screws into laminated wood panels, as this helps prevent the material from splitting.

If you don’t have one, the supplied Allen key will also work, but it requires more effort. I used a hammer for assembling the back panel connections, which was easier with gentle taps.

Hello,

I agree with the previous posts and would like to add that with my last Billy, I used a cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque set to a low level to avoid driving the screws too deep into the wood and thus preventing damage.

The subtle difference between manual and power screwing really surprised me, as the cordless screwdriver is more precise and faster.

Additionally, I used a rubber mallet to gently fit the shelves without risking scratches.

Hammer: only for the back panel

Allen key is sufficient, cordless screwdriver is faster

I don't need anything else.

Regarding tool selection: A cordless drill with adjustable torque is ideal since the screws used in the Billy furniture work with both plastic and wood. Excessive force can damage the threaded inserts in the wood.

The small hex key included serves its purpose for simple assembly but can be tiring to use and offers no torque control.

A small Phillips screwdriver and a rubber mallet are recommended, as they are often helpful when assembling the back panel and the dowels.

Using a regular hammer is too risky because the wood can easily splinter.
