Hello everyone, I am planning to store some IKEA Brimnes furniture for an extended period and would like to know the best way to keep it undamaged.

Specifically, I am interested in whether it is better to disassemble the furniture or store it fully assembled, what storage conditions (temperature, humidity) are ideal, and if there are any special protective measures to preserve surfaces and edges from dust, moisture, or damage.

Since Brimnes furniture is mostly made of coated wood panels, I am concerned about possible delamination or warping caused by improper storage.

I would appreciate any practical tips from experienced users or recommendations for ideal storage.

As a general recommendation, I suggest fully disassembling IKEA Brimnes furniture before storage.

- Disassembled furniture parts are easier to store and save space.
- This also reduces mechanical stress that can cause warping or damage.

Regarding storage conditions: Furniture should be kept in a dry, temperature-controlled room, ideally with a relative humidity of around 45-55% and temperatures between 15 and 22 degrees Celsius (59 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit).

Protect surfaces with breathable covers. Plastic sheeting can cause condensation and should be avoided. Dust covers made of cotton or specialized fabrics are more suitable.

In addition to kieran’s comments, I would like to provide a more detailed explanation of the issues related to Brimnes surfaces.

Brimnes furniture is typically made from MDF or particleboard with a melamine resin-coated surface. This coating is resistant to scratches but is not completely impervious to moisture and temperature fluctuations.

When storing, it is important to:
- Avoid placing furniture directly on cold floors (e.g., uninsulated concrete) or leaning it against exterior walls that may allow moisture or temperature changes.
- Use wooden blocks or pallets underneath to allow air circulation and prevent moisture damage from below.
- Disassemble if possible; store individual panels flat and avoid placing heavy objects on top to prevent warping.

Do you still need information about the specific type of storage space (basement, attic, etc.)? Recommendations might vary depending on this.

Thank you for the initial helpful responses!

Regarding the storage room: it is an unheated but well-ventilated basement space with slightly fluctuating temperatures and occasional moderate humidity (up to about 65% relative humidity).

Specifically, I am wondering if the basement is suitable for storage and whether additional measures such as dehumidifiers or special packaging would be advisable.

I am also interested in any special care recommendations before storing items, such as cleaning or particular surface treatments to prevent long-term damage.

An unheated basement with up to 65% relative humidity is generally usable, but this is at the upper limit for this type of furniture. The humidity should definitely be reduced to prevent mold growth and wood swelling.

Recommendations:
- Use a dehumidifier or at least ventilate regularly to reduce moisture.
- Cover furniture with special breathable protective sheets against moisture (no plastic film).
- Thorough cleaning before storage is important, as dust and grease can promote stains that react with moisture.

Before storing, wipe the furniture dry and grease-free, ideally with a damp cloth followed by polishing with a dry microfiber cloth.

Amidst all the factual information here, a small reminder shouldn’t be missed: Make the storage space a bit more comfortable for your furniture! 😉

Jokes aside, humidity is key. Especially Brimnes parts are very durable, but moisture can really affect them.

Here’s a tip to make their storage more pleasant:
- Place cushions or blankets between the disassembled panels to prevent hard edges from touching and avoid scratches.
- Use smoke or odor absorbers to keep them fresh and prevent musty smells.

And if the basement seems complicated because of humidity: you might also consider temporary storage in a car or a wooden garage, if good ventilation is possible!
