I am currently planning to rearrange my apartment a bit and want to equip my Ikea Pax dresser with some additional shelves. I have a question: How much weight can the shelves of the Ikea Pax series actually support?
I am mainly interested in the maximum load capacity per shelf because I plan to store both clothing in boxes as well as some books and kitchen utensils on them.
I have already found some information on the Ikea website, but the load capacities seem to vary depending on the width and type of shelf. Maybe someone has practical experience with these shelves or knows exactly how many kilograms (pounds) I can safely stack on a single shelf without it bending or breaking.

I installed Pax shelves in my apartment, mostly 50 cm (20 inches) wide. The load capacity is about 15 kg (33 lbs) per shelf, which is sufficient for clothing and light items.
For books, I recommend using shelves with a middle support or additional support rails to prevent excessive bending.

This was important to me because I often store large quantities of cookbooks and porcelain in the Pax cabinets. That’s why I specifically chose the 50cm deep (20 inches) shelves from IKEA and additionally installed small metal supports in the middle.

A small addition from me: when you load shelves with heavier items, the mounting materials you use can also make a difference—whether the shelves are supported only by plastic wall anchors or by metal brackets. This often makes the difference between "still holding" and "Oh no, it’s already creaking."
In short: it’s better to pack a bit lighter or securely fasten the shelves; that way, they last longer and avoid problems.
