Hello everyone, I have a question regarding the durability of a Pax wardrobe from IKEA, especially when it is well maintained and regularly serviced. Based on your experience or knowledge, how long would such a wardrobe last in a normal household without unusual stresses? I am interested in both the structural stability and the surfaces, hinges, and fittings. It would be helpful if you could point out any potential weak points that may develop over time and whether it is worthwhile to invest in additional care products to extend its lifespan.

A well-maintained Pax wardrobe can easily last 10 years or more. It is important to regularly tighten the screws and lubricate the hinges. The surfaces are sensitive to moisture, so protect them from wet cleaning.

I can only emphasize the importance of maintenance. In addition to regularly tightening the fittings, you should also pay attention to maintaining appropriate indoor humidity, as excessive moisture can damage the hardware and laminate surfaces. Another tip is to handle the doors gently and avoid overloading them unnecessarily, so that the hinges and shelves are not overstressed. With careful care, it is ideally possible to achieve a lifespan of 15 years or more. Cleaning products for laminate are usually not necessary; a dry cloth is sufficient for light dust removal.

I think that’s quite exaggerated. As long as you don’t soak the wardrobe, there aren’t any problems. Of course, these surfaces are not designed for outdoor use, but the concern about moisture is often unnecessarily overstated here.

What bothers me more is the overall durability of the fasteners. Many Pax wardrobes are frequently replaced, not because of wear and tear, but because people want to change the design. My theory: the issue is less about the technology and more about consumer mentality.

I’m really happy about this discussion! 🙂 In my experience, the Pax wardrobe lasts a very long time if you take good care of it. I’ve had mine for over 7 years now, and it’s still rock solid.

What also helps me is making sure no heavy items are stored unnecessarily on the edges and avoiding too much clutter inside the wardrobe. That way, I feel the shelves don’t sag.

So, proper maintenance is definitely worth it, not only for durability but also because the wardrobe stays looking good for longer!

Interesting thought regarding consumer mentality, I think! However, my question was more about how long a wardrobe realistically lasts if you don’t replace it but maintain and use it properly.

I’m also interested in your opinions on the wear rate of hinges and fittings in particular. Are there specific spare parts that it’s wise to keep on hand if you want to use a Pax for a longer time?
