Hello everyone, I am currently planning to get a new wardrobe system and am considering buying the Pax furniture from Ikea. My question to the community is: How long do Ikea Pax units generally last with normal use, meaning without heavy stress or improper handling?
I am especially interested in experiences related to the durability of the frames, hinges, and interior fittings. I have read that Pax is popular mainly due to its modular design, but how does it hold up in terms of overall stability in everyday use over several years?
If anyone has tips on maintenance or potential weak points to watch out for in order to extend its lifespan, I would appreciate your feedback. Thank you in advance!

How long do Ikea PAX furniture pieces really last under normal use, meaning without heavy wear or misuse?Based on my research and experiences from people I know, PAX furniture typically lasts around 10 to 15 years with proper assembly and normal use. Durability depends greatly on how much stress the furniture undergoes and the quality of the assembly.
The cabinets are mostly made from particleboard with a melamine finish, which is sturdy but not comparable to solid wood. The hinges and drawer runners are generally durable, though some signs of wear may appear after a few years, especially if the doors are frequently used.
Key points:
- Careful assembly, preferably with two people
- Avoiding overloading
- Regularly checking and tightening screws
With good care and by not overloading the units, you can definitely extend their lifespan. They are certainly not short-lived, but not furniture meant to last multiple generations either.

I personally have a wardrobe that we bought about 8 years ago – despite frequent use, neither the door hinges nor the drawer slides are seriously damaged.
My advice: When assembling, make sure the doors are perfectly aligned. Especially with large wardrobes, even a slightly crooked assembly can lead to stress and wear much faster.
Also, I recommend not storing excessively heavy items in the drawers and not exceeding the maximum weight limits specified in the assembly instructions for wardrobes. This will help keep everything stable for longer.

Careful installation, preferably with two peopleI completely agree. Especially with larger modules, having a second person is a great help to fit the parts together precisely.

Do not exceed the maximum weights specified in the assembly instructions for wardrobesVery important. Ignoring this risks rapid wear of the fittings and possible distortion. In my experience, the PAX units are robust when used properly.

I have used a PAX wardrobe for five years and have found that the build quality is solid, but the load capacity is limited in some areas. For example, the large doors tend to sag slightly after a while, probably because the hinges always need some readjustment. Sometimes this has been somewhat annoying.
Another point is to make sure the adjustable feet are correctly set on uneven floors, which prevents long-term tilting and stress problems.
My advice is not only to focus on the appearance but also to strictly follow the correct dimensions and load limits during planning. When in doubt, it is better to choose more smaller units rather than fewer large ones.
