By default, the shelves just rest on small shelf supports, which sometimes don’t hold optimally, especially when placing heavier items on them or when the bookshelf is moved. I’m interested in options and practical tips on how to fix the Billy shelves more securely so they stay in place and don’t slide around. It’s important to me that the fix doesn’t damage the material or affect the appearance of the bookshelf. Maybe someone knows simple tricks or special products that work well for this? Thanks in advance!
Hello scarlett30, I can give you a few tips on how to securely fix your Billy shelves to prevent slipping. First, you should check the shelf supports: if they are loose, you might consider replacing them with more stable versions, which IKEA also offers or can be found at hardware stores.
A good approach is to stick thin felt or rubber pads under the shelves to increase friction. Alternatively, you can apply small strips of double-sided tape under the shelf at the contact points, which usually holds well and can be removed without leaving residue.
If you want to go a step further, there are also special mini brackets or shelf supports that can be fixed with small screws to the shelf. However, be careful—flat-pack furniture like IKEA’s is not always designed for screws, so pay attention to material thickness and screw diameter.
In summary: checking and possibly replacing the supports, adding rubber or felt stoppers, using double-sided tape, or small screw brackets are all practical options. 🙂 Hope this helps!

Huge question! 🙂 I tried using small Velcro dots – it’s brilliant because you can still remove the floor without tools. Plus, they hold really well! Just stick a few dots on the support surfaces, and the sliding stops immediately! Perfect if you want to rearrange the shelf sometimes. Good luck! You can definitely do it :-)

I’m a bit cautious about using small screws because of the thin material. And what do you think about the idea of attaching a thin strip on the inside edge to prevent the shelves from wobbling? The shelf should be changed as little as possible. Thanks in advance!
