Good morning everyone, I am looking for environmentally friendly methods to clean the Ikea Hemnes furniture series. It is important to me that the cleaning product used contains no harmful substances and is biodegradable, while still being effective enough to remove dirt such as grease and dust buildup. I am also interested in tips on how to care for the furniture surfaces without damaging the painted or waxed wood finish. So, it’s not just about cleaning, but also about maintaining the durability of the furniture—preferably without harsh chemicals. Does anyone have experience or specific recommendations that are gentle both for the environment and for the furniture? Thanks in advance!

Vinegar essence contains acetic acid, which can damage paint if exposed for a prolonged time, especially with water-based paints. This generally applies to the painted surfaces of the Hemnes series, which are economical and thinly coated. Therefore, it is important that:
- Vinegar is only used diluted (maximum 1 part vinegar to 10 parts water).
- Contact with the wood and paint should be very limited in time (maximum a few minutes).
- Afterwards, it is essential to wipe with clear water to neutralize the acid.
Alternatively, I recommend biodegradable, alcohol-free, grease-dissolving cleaners based on sugar-based surfactants or soda (sodium carbonate) in low concentrations. Soda is somewhat abrasive but works well for removing grease stains if applied carefully.

I would like to add that regular maintenance is important to sustainably combine environmental friendliness with furniture preservation. Simple dusting – without moisture – often preserves the surface. Additionally:
- Use mild, warm soapy water for cleaning.
- Afterwards, allow the furniture to dry thoroughly.
- According to DIN standards, veneer furniture is sensitive to water, so moisture should be applied sparingly.
- Furniture surfaces from Hemnes are often lacquered, so avoid using oils or waxes without precise knowledge, as these may dissolve the lacquer layer.
The general rule is: Use as little chemicals as possible and as much gentleness as necessary.

I once had Hemnes furniture and often cleaned it with a mild soap solution – to me, it just felt more comfortable since I didn’t have to worry about harsh chemicals.

Interesting, but I wonder if that approach might be a bit too cautious. Of course, using eco-friendly cleaners is intended to protect the environment, but these products are often not as green as they seem. Many natural ingredients can also pose a risk to surfaces if used incorrectly. Perhaps the focus should be more on minimal cleaning effort and durable care of the furniture, rather than constantly chasing the latest eco-product trend. Sustainability is more than just organic cleaners – ultimately, it is the longevity of the furniture that matters.

Thank you all for your detailed contributions! In summary, I understand that I should:
- use a slightly damp microfiber cloth and avoid harsh chemicals,
- try mild soapy water or diluted vinegar briefly to remove grease,
- definitely not let stronger acids or aggressive cleaners sit for a long time,
- avoid applying unsuitable care oils on lacquered surfaces, and
- keep the furniture as dry as possible to protect the coating.

This gives me a good basis to clean Hemnes furniture in an environmentally friendly and gentle way. I am, of course, open to further experiences!
