WimpaHello everyone,
I recently purchased several pieces of furniture from the Ikea Brimnes series, mainly cupboards and bed frames, and I am now looking for the best way to care for the surface. The BRIMNES furniture features a special foil-coated surface that is supposed to be very easy to maintain, but of course, I want to avoid doing anything wrong or damaging the coating.
My specific question is:
What is the best way to care for the surface of Ikea BRIMNES without risking scratches, loss of shine, or discoloration? Which cleaning products and methods are recommended? Are there any special precautions or tips to keep in mind when cleaning the furniture regularly?
I look forward to your experiences and advice!

The surface of BRIMNES is coated with foil, so normally a damp microfiber cloth is sufficient. That is a good, correct start, but I would explain it in a bit more detail because there are some important aspects with foil-coated surfaces that many people overlook.
First, regarding cleaning: The BRIMNES series uses a melamine or plastic foil which is durable but not indestructible. Damp microfiber cloths are ideal because they effectively pick up dirt without scratching. All cleaning agents should be neutral; acidic or alkaline cleaners are unsuitable as they can damage or dull the foil.
Second, make sure to keep the cloth only slightly damp—excess water can seep into edges and in the worst case, undercut the foil or damage the wood underneath.
Third, for stubborn stains, I recommend mild soapy water (about a drop of pH-neutral dish soap in warm water) and gentle wiping. Never use abrasive or scouring agents, nor cleaning sprays containing alcohol, acetone, or ammonia—as they will destroy the protective layer.
As light maintenance in between, you can also use a dry, soft cloth to remove dust and help prevent micro-scratches.
Do you have specific stains or is the furniture used in a particularly demanding environment? Then we could provide more targeted advice on care and protection.

Never use abrasive cleaners or scrubbing agents, and avoid cleaning sprays containing alcohol, acetone, or ammonia – these will damage the protective coating. That hits the nail on the head. Additionally, I would like to point out that caring for the BRIMNES surface especially involves avoiding mechanical stress. Sharp objects or continuous rubbing can permanently damage the foil surfaces.
I also recommend:
- Regular wiping with a dry, soft cloth to prevent dust buildup
- Using coasters or mats under moist or dirty items
- Avoiding direct sunlight exposure, as UV rays can cause discoloration over time
In short: no special care products are needed, but attention and proper cleaning habits are essential. The foil surfaces are durable but not invulnerable.
If the surface does get minor scratches, repair is difficult – usually, replacement or covering the affected area is the only solution.
