Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble an Ikea Pax wardrobe soon, but I currently do not have a drill available and would like to know how to put this wardrobe together without one. I understand that many parts have pre-drilled holes and require a specific assembly sequence, but I am wondering if there are practical alternatives or suitable tools that would still allow the assembly without compromising stability. What methods do you recommend for fastening the connectors or securing the back panel when no electric drill is available? I look forward to your tips and experiences, especially focusing on appropriate tools and techniques that people might already have at home.

Hey Fugu4, great question! Assembling a PAX wardrobe without a power drill is definitely doable – you just need some patience and the right alternatives. For example, a cordless screwdriver or even a good manual screwdriver with various bits can work well to drive in the screws. For the dowels and back panels, you can often just hammer in the nails instead of drilling. It does require a bit more muscle than usual, but the system is designed quite cleverly. It’s important to align the parts carefully before screwing them together. And if you have self-tapping screws – jackpot! 😀 Good luck!

I often wonder if it really makes sense to assemble furniture without a power drill when the products are actually designed for such tools. Ikea items are cleverly designed, but they definitely rely on the speed and ease of using a drill or cordless screwdriver. Of course, you can screw everything in by hand, but who wants to do that? My theory is that if you skip the power drill, you’re either wasting time or compromising on stability. Well, sure, if it’s just about putting pieces together, it’s possible—but whether it will be durable in the long run, I have my doubts.

For assembly without a drill: screwdriver (Phillips/flathead depending on the screw), hammer for nails. Screwing in the screws requires some effort. Attach the back panel simply with nails. Done.

Precise approach: Ikea PAX wardrobes are designed for assembly using screws and wooden connectors, which are typically installed efficiently with a power screwdriver. If one is not available, I recommend:

- Using a manual screwdriver with the appropriate bit for the screw connections.
- Installing wooden dowels without a drill is considerably more difficult. In this case, you can try to use the pre-drilled dowel holes provided by Ikea or work with a small hand drill if available.
- For the back panel, nailing small nails in with a hammer is sufficient and corresponds to the intended fixation.

Stability is maintained if the screws are tightened evenly and no excessive force is applied that could damage the wood.

I can understand how you feel when you don’t have the right drill – I was in the same situation once. The important thing is to take your time and not rush. What helped me was turning the screws slowly and carefully, using pliers for extra leverage in difficult spots. It’s great that you’re using Ikea’s pre-assembled components, as that makes many things easier. If you find yourself getting overwhelmed, you can always borrow a drill for a short time, but in a pinch, manual work will do.
