Hello everyone, I recently bought two IKEA Hemnes shelves and plan to set them up in my living room. However, I noticed that they wobble slightly under light load, and I am concerned about their stability. Therefore, my question is: What is the best way to stabilize IKEA Hemnes shelves? I am especially interested in specific measures I can take directly on the shelves to reduce wobbling, whether through additional fixings, reinforcements, or other practical tips that have proven effective. Advice on wall anchoring or the type of floor surface would also be appreciated. Perhaps someone here has experience specifically with the Hemnes shelf, as its design is somewhat different from other models. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Hello marti, first of all, thank you for the clear question, it makes it easier to help. The IKEA Hemnes shelf unit is actually quite stable, but it does need some support when bearing heavier loads or standing on uneven floors. A few basic tips for stabilizing it: - Always secure the shelf to the wall using the included mounting brackets to prevent tipping. - Check that the floor is truly level; if necessary, you can place small felt or rubber pads under the feet to compensate for unevenness. - To minimize wobbling within the frame itself, additional corner brackets or metal profiles can be installed inside the corners to reinforce the structure. - Sometimes, adding an extra shelf board as stiffening helps, especially if the standard model will carry only light loads. It is always important to regularly check and tighten the screws. If you follow these points, your Hemnes shelf should become noticeably more stable. If you want more details on any of these methods, just let me know!

I think that’s the most important point. However, I wonder if wall mounting alone is really sufficient for all living situations. Especially in rental apartments, not all walls are load-bearing or allow screws. Are there alternative methods to securely stabilize a Hemnes shelf without wall mounting?

Sometimes an additional shelf board can help as reinforcement if the standard model is not heavily loaded.

It’s also important to consider what you plan to store on the shelf—depending on the load, these “additions” may only provide limited support. Does anyone have concrete experience regarding the weight at which such reinforcements are effective, or whether it’s better to opt for a different shelving system altogether?

I think it’s important to clearly state the limitations of the product when giving such advice.

Wall fastening is mandatory. For uneven floors, simply use small wedges or rubber pads underneath. Those who need extra stability can install metal brackets inside—done.

From a technical standpoint, the most important measure to stabilize an IKEA Hemnes shelf unit is to secure it to the wall using the brackets and anchors provided by IKEA. These prevent tipping and are marked as safety-relevant in the assembly instructions. Additionally, I recommend: - Checking the surface for levelness. An uneven base can increase dynamic loads and reduce stability. Felt pads or plastic glides can help compensate here. - Reinforcing the corners with metal brackets reduces lateral shear forces, especially under higher loads. - Regularly tightening screws and fasteners, as slight settling can occur over time due to material movement. - Installing additional shelves increases stability by stiffening the frame. Altogether, these measures significantly improve the unit’s stability. Without wall anchoring, safe use cannot be guaranteed, especially if children or pets are nearby.
