Hello everyone,

I am planning to install Ikea Metod cabinets in my kitchen, but I am unsure how to securely attach them to different types of walls. I am particularly interested in what to consider when mounting on load-bearing concrete walls, drywall (plasterboard) walls, and possibly brick walls to ensure a stable and secure installation. Which fasteners and installation techniques are best suited for reliably fixing the cabinets and ensuring long-term safety? Additionally, I would like advice on how to proceed if the wall is uneven or difficult to access in certain areas. I would appreciate as detailed information as possible, especially regarding the fasteners (anchors, screws) and installation methods. Thank you in advance for your expertise!

Installing Ikea Metod cabinets requires appropriate anchors and screws suited to each wall type. For concrete walls, heavy-duty anchors or chemical anchors are recommended as they provide maximum load capacity. For brick walls, expansion anchors or hammer-in anchors that grip into the masonry are suitable. Drywall (plasterboard) requires special hollow wall anchors (e.g., toggle bolts or metal hollow wall anchors) since there is no solid backing for secure fastening.

It is important to check the wall before installation using a suitable drill to ensure no pipes or cables are hit. For uneven walls, an anchor and screw system with washers can help achieve an even and secure fit. Additionally, installation should follow Ikea’s instructions, taking into account the maximum load capacity of each cabinet.

If the wall is too weak or damaged, I recommend installing mounting brackets or a mounting rail attached to stable areas of the wall to distribute the load.

I would like to point out that not every DIYer necessarily has experience with chemical anchors, and handling them can indeed be challenging. Proper preparation and precise mixing are crucial for safety.

Furthermore, from a practical standpoint, I question whether it is always necessary to rely on chemical anchors when heavy-duty expansion anchors often suffice, especially in standard residential concrete walls. A general recommendation without considering specific circumstances can therefore be problematic.

This also depends heavily on whether the bricks are solid or hollow, as well as on the condition of the masonry. Careful pre-drilling and the use of anchors with high load capacity are essential. Additionally, the weight of fully loaded cabinets should not be underestimated.

The issue of uneven walls requires more than just washers; a mounting rail can help keep all cabinets level and better distribute the load.

Concrete walls: Heavy-duty anchors and long screws.

Drywall: Use hollow wall anchors or toggle bolts, not regular anchors.

Brick walls: Use expansion anchors, but ensure a solid substrate.

It is always important to carefully check the load and alignment.

My main concern is what to consider for load-bearing concrete walls, drywall (gypsum board) walls, and possibly brick walls to ensure a stable and secure installation.

The key to installing Ikea Metod cabinets on different wall types lies in choosing the correct type of anchor and screw, as well as preparing the wall surface properly.

Overview:
- Concrete: Use heavy-duty anchors with appropriately sized screws. The wall must be clean of dust, and drill holes should be accurately positioned. This type has the highest load capacity.
- Brick walls: Identify the brick type first (solid bricks are more load-bearing). Expansion anchors with sufficient length and diameter are recommended. The substrate must be stable, and the mortar should not be crumbly.
- Drywall (gypsum board): Special hollow wall anchors (e.g., toggle bolts) are necessary. Since Metod cabinets can be heavy, it’s advisable to install them using one or more mounting rails or to fix them onto a stable wall or stud behind the drywall.

One often underestimated factor is the weight of the filled cabinets. Therefore, include safety margins when choosing fastening hardware. Also, pay close attention to Ikea’s installation instructions regarding the number and placement of wall fixings. It is often overlooked that, for example, wall cabinets require multiple attachment points.

For uneven walls: Before installation, you can create a level line using mounting strips or use washers if only minor unevenness exists. For larger irregularities, customized mounting rails can be helpful.

In conclusion: Work safely with a spirit level and check with a wire detector before starting to ensure no cables or pipes are in the drill area.
